This
is the second Heroes and Prospects offering from In
the Game. As with last year's set, this year provides
the best of the future prospects as well as the blasts
from the past. Among the names you know, you'll find
Hero cards of legends like Patrick Roy, Dave Keon, Steve
Yzerman and Brian Leetch. Also included in the set are
former AHL and CHLers that are currently lacing them
up in the NHL that includes Jason Spezza, Eric Staal,
Alexander Ovechkin and red hot Sidney Crosby. However,
the true gold may be the cardboard debuts of some bright
prospects including John Tavares, Angelo Esposito, Chris
Bourque, Bobby Ryan and Evgeni Malkin.
The set contains great photography from the past and
present. Some of the vintage player shots will blow
you away. Just check out the buzz cut on the Brian Leetch
card #25. Each card also has extensive information about
the player on the back of the card. That's something
that seems to be missing in this new age of hockey cards.

The
insert set in this year's Heroes and Prospects includes
a 12 card set of Shooting Stars from the 2005 AHL All-Star
Classic in Manchester between the AHL Stars and Planet
USA. The retail boxes will include a 13 card insert
set of the Memorial Cup winning London Knights.
The
popular He Shoots He Scores redemption program is back
again with Heroes and Prospects. Collectors can gather
250 cards to redeem them for a special memorabilia card
from ITG. Some of the highlights from the set include
dual jerseys of Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, Ray
Bourque and Dion Phaneuf, and Russian phenoms Alexander
Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.

Game Used Card Scans |

| Comments:
The
Heroes and Prospect set provides one memorabilia card
per 20 packs on average. From the pictures we've seen
there are going to be some stunning pulls from this
set. ITG seems to get multicolored swatches on almost
all their memorabilia pieces somehow. Our two color
Bouwmeester was no different. There are some great mixtures
of youngsters and veterans in the memorabilia sets,
and some insert sets like Aspiring even have them paired
together. The CHL and AHL complete logo 1 of 1 cards
will be another memorabilia card that collectors will
be hoping is hiding in their boxes.
In
the Game must have been listening to collectors. The
size of the regular jersey card swatches have nearly
doubled from last year. They are HUGE. I'm sure many
gorgeous multi-color swatches will be pulled from the
product. The emblems and numbers cards are always popular
with collectors and with 30 of each available, the odds
aren't as tough as they were in the past. There's still
the gold version for those that want that super hard
to find card.

Autograph Scans |
|
|
|
| Comments:
In the Game offers an average
of one autograph per 14 packs in this year's boxes.
We beat the odds on our box with two autographs. Designs
of the autograph cards mimic the base set. Stickers
were used once again this year. While I'm not a big
fan of sticker autos, ITG was able to produce all the
autograph cards without using redemption cards. That's
a bonus for any collector. Many collectors will be hunting
down autographs of the latest NHL rookies like Sidney
Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. Many NHL legends are
also available with players like Brian Leetch, Patrick
Roy, Bernie Parent and Cam Neely. Collectors will also
be on the lookout for first time autos of phenoms such
as John Tavares, Chris Bourque, Evgeni Malkin, and Al
Montoya. The checklist is massive this year and will
provide a lot of variety for collectors
In the Game also added
a new wrinkle to this year's set with dual autograph
cards. Some of the paired players in the set include
Ray Bourque with his son Chris, Ovechkin with fellow
Russian Malkin, and the Flyers dynamic duo of Mike Richards
and Jeff Carter.

The
Final Verdict! |
|
|

|
I
give it 4 out of 5 H.I. Fives. As nicely put together
as this set is, some collectors may skip over it as it
doesn't feature NHL teams and logos. In my opinion it's
their loss. With 2-4 memorabilia cards per box,it provides
good value for the break. Then there's still the possibility
of hitting a homerun with cards of Tavares, Crosby and
Ovechkin.
If you're looking for a break from the monotony of the
NHL cards being thrown out, then this set is definitely
worth a look. And if you're looking for affordable cards
of the latest NHL stars, then this set is definitely worth
the shot. |
