   Base Card Scans

Comments:

This set is a goalie lover's dream come true. The set is loaded with the best goalies to have ever played the game and a peek into the future for the upcoming rubber stoppers of the NHL. The base set is broken up into eight different subsets. Some of them include Team Canada, Future Stars, Greats of the Game, and 1st round picks. The highlight of the base set could be potential hobby star Yutaka Fukufuji, who makes his long awaited cardboard debut.

The photography is sharp for most of the sets, and the designs are very pleasing to the eye. By using non-NHL events, In the Game was able to get around their lack of an NHL license to produce some stunning pictures of current stars from International events and older minor league teams. If you're the die hard NHL fan, they close up shots of your favorite stars will still keep your team colors on the photos.

One thing we noticed with the break was the variety within each pack. Most times, you received one card from each of the subsets. This makes for a wonderful shot at completing your sets with a box or two. No subset seemed that much more shortprinted than another.

   Autograph Scan(s):
Comments:

In the Game offers an average of one autograph per 16 packs in this year's Between the Pipes boxes. Much like the base set, the autographs are broken up into a bunch of different subsets. These include the Future Stars, Stars of the Game, Greats of the Game, First Round Picks, and Team Canada. The ITG site has the shortprinted player autographs already listed on their site, so give it a look. One great thing about this year's autograph set is that it is a completely different design than the base set. In past ITG sets, it always seemed like they just slapped the sticker on top of the base card. These autographs are very nicely done and will be real popular with the goalie and autograph hounds.

One unfortunate part of the autographs is the fact they were done with stickers. The good part about it is no redemptions. Another good thing was the design of the cards makes it really tough to tell if it's a sticker or not. Of course you can tell when you examine the card, but the sticker plays into the card design very nicely.

   Insert Scans

Comments:

When you speak of Between the Pipes, the first insert that pops into you head should be The Mask. Arguably, these have been and still are the most popular insert sets ever produced. This year's set is similar to the last Between the Pipes The Mask III set with the foil printing. While I personally miss the Dufex printing technology In the Game originally used with the first two BTP releases, it doesn't detract much from the set at all. For a new twist, masks worn in international tournaments, as well as masks from some of the upcoming NHL prospects like Carey Price and Jeff Glass. At a rate of 1:18, there's a slight chance you may be lucky enough to pull two in your box like we did!

While most of the focus may be put on the mask cards, don't forget about the Forgotten Franchise inserts. This 10 card set features some teams from yesteryear that some collectors may not have heard of before. Some interesting photography was used in the set, and it works as some really nice hockey history. Could be a sleeper in this product.

The popular He Shoots He Saves redemption program is back again with Heroes and Prospects. Collectors can gather 250 cards to redeem them for a special memorabilia card from ITG. Look for updates on the ITG website for available prizes!

Comments:

The ITG provides another wide variety of inserts for their memorabilia sets again in this product. The usual suspects like the jerseys, numbers, jersey/sticks, and emblems can all be found in this set as well. Some welcome additions to the ITG memorabilia card set family are the Stickworks triple stick cards and the Shooting Gallery 6 piece jersey card. The Shooting Gallery inserts should be wildly popular with both goalie and team collectors alike. The Mask memorabilia returns to Between the Pipes as well. However, this time it came back with a huge surprise. The long awaited Ken Dryden memorabilia cards make their ITG debut within the Mask memorabilia sets. Fans of Ken have been waiting for a shot at his memorabilia cards for years. And don't forget to look for autographed variations in many of the insert sets within the product

There was one drawback for me on the memorabilia cards this year from BTP. The lack of noting the Gold parallels with either different card numbers or stamping on the back could confuse a lot of collectors. We've already received lots of questions on the messageboards asking for clarification between the silvers and harder to find gold parallels. Since ITG used gold colored backgrounds on some of the insert sets, it only makes it more confusing. Luckily, the auto'd versions aren't hard to distinguish, and they're also serial numbered on the backs.

   The Final Verdict!

I give it 4 out of 5 H.I. Fives. If you're a goalie fan, then it gets a 6 out of 5. If you're not, there's still plenty to be entertained from with the break. I would've liked to have seen the Goalie Nightmare cards come back so ITG could have incorporated memorabilia of stars like Crosby and Ovechkin into the set. Then again, when you're dealing with a cult like goalie collectors, you really don't need to add much more than a few pads, a paddle, and a cage to make 'em happy. Enjoy your breaks, we did!
