About a month ago, i decided to break some slabs to test some grading companies standard with BGS standard (and mostly to get more $ on my cards  ).

So, these are the slabs I opened :

From KSA, I expected to get about half point below what they actually are, so i expected the Lowe & the Mullen to return me mint and the leetch gem mint from BGS.

From BCCG (both brodeur & kurri), I was expecting grades BGS 8.5 or higher.

And from ACA, i didn't expect anything, since they were new in business.

there is the results from BGS :

BCCG :

No surprise to me, they all came mint (or BGS 8.5).

Now the surprises begin
From ACA :

Exact same grades... but the surprises are... Subgrades!
take a look at the differences :

stamkos YG subgrades BGS ACA:
Centering Corners Edges Surfaces
9 10 9.5 10 9.5 9.5 9.5 9
Final Grade: 9.5

Evander Kane YG BGS ACA:
Centering Corners Edges Surfaces
10 10 8.5 9.5 9.5 8.5 9.5 10
Final Grade: 9.0

I wonder how a card can offcenter, or corners can upgrades in shipping???

And finnally the reason of this title :

That just proves that grading is an utter and total scam (with BGS being probably the biggest scammers of the bunch). Why anybody would waste their money is beyond me....

I wouldn't use a company to grade the condition of the card. I would probably only use it to grade the authenticity of the card to show that it wasn't a counterfeit.
I have a Don Cherry rookie that is in bad shape. I don't care though. It is a nice piece to my vintage collection.

I agree. The problem is that a lot of companies (even BGS) have been known to slab fake cards. But at least the reliabilty is still higher with the authentication service as opposed to the grading service.

Not to start a grading war, but I have never placed any stock in grading anything newer than 1980 and would certainly not pay a premium for a graded card.

You may want to post this on the Beckett website under the bgs topic if you want some constructive reply`s, here or on different hobby boards there not much love for graded cards.

Amen!! I USE to buy into the grading BS, but soon realized it is corrupt and inconsistant as Upper Deck :)

I get cards graded or buy graded ones. The reason...I collect vintage and even if it is a 1 at least I know I have an authentic card. I love the pre war cards but they can be VERY expensive so I want to make sure the card is what it appears to be.
For example, the card below are popped, they have had a part of the card removed. Why get it graded? Because it will come back marked AUTHENTIC on the slab. The value on these cards is not huge, but they are so rare that just having one in any condition is an accomplishment (at least it is for me).
