ITG - Team Logos on Helmets?

Since Leaf has taken over ITG product they've gone as far as omitting logos from goaltender masks whereas under Dr. Price you'd always see a Habs or Oilers logos on their cards. Examples would be Patrick Roy and Grant Fuhr.

My question is, how did he avoid NHL team lawsuits? Is it because a goaltenders mask is considered custom work? Part of the goaltenders likeness maybe?

I've always wondered this. Any thoughts or answers?

Towards the end ITG released Badge of Honor Full NHL Shield Cards at an Expo VIP Party I believe, also there was a Felix Potvin MTO I saw where the pic shows the full Maple Leafs Jersey. I always wondered, considering they havent done that since they had the license years ago.

the Mask's are property of the artist not the NHL or team ...

I'm assuming the artist would have had permission at the time to use a team logo, then any photos of the mask afterwards should be good to go?

My understanding was that Masks were "art" and therefor not subject to the same restrictions as the team logos... even if they were paintings of those logos.

It's the same reason why Art cards could have full logos on them.


I assumed that Leaf was going out of their way to play "extra nice" as an unlicensed manufacturer (have to think that the NHL & PA will at least open it up for more licenses in the future).

It isn't always the case, sometimes the goalie helmet is the generic team one that has a sticker with the team logo. One curious case is the 2013-14 BTP Daniel Berthiaume which has the Kings logo on the auto version but not on the base card.
