Howdy gang -

My apologies if this belongs in the Vintage section however I am looking for a broader look at vintage and collections and (frankly) I would like input from a wider swatch than just the folks who end up going into the Vintage section.

Late last week, I swung by the LCS for some supplies. There was a little extra loose change in my pocket so I knew there was a better than average chance that I would walk out with a box, few packs, singles etc but what I ended up leaving with was not expected. I dropped about $200 or so on a few vintage baseball and a Tim Horton graded card.

It was Jackie Robinson day around MLB so picking up a beautiful Jackie card did generate some excitement.

Anyway - this all got me poking around the vintage hockey marketplace. After a couple hours of digging, a few beers and a few notebooks of Seven style John Doe notebook scribble I am now fully ramped up to dive into the vintage world. I certainly have targeted HOF rookie cards and such but would also like to (foolishly) look at a long term set to work on for the next decade or so.

So - all that being said - what are some of your favorite Vintage sets and why. Is it design, is it the player pool, is it a noteworthy year?

Also - is there anything I should know to keep in mind specifically around counterfeit cards? Certainly I know enough to be dangerous regarding the Roy, Gretzky, and Orr (and probably some of the other big ones that aren't on the front of my brain at the moment) but are there particular sets that have been targeted, are there lesser known players to keep an eye out for or are there any runs that were just mass produced (similar to the Brett Hull rookies).

Thanks in advance for any help - hopefully I will have some pretty stuff to share over the coming days, weeks, months, years, etc.

I really like 71-72 OPC. Stacked with some good rookies, NM-MT cards are cheap enough to build a whole set. Keep some cash put away though if you go for graded. Some cards, even in PSA 8 go for a quite a bit (like the #111 checklist and Bobby Orr cards)

If I ever get to the point where I have resources available for a vintage collection, I'd start with the 1951/52 Parkhurst set. It was the first hockey set produced in a decade so almost every card is a rookie. Those rookies include Gordie Howe and Rocket Richard. Arguably the most important and iconic hockey set ever produced.

For a cheaper option I'll also recommend the 71/72 OPC set. Very cool design and a loaded checklist.

I like vintage as it brings me back to my childhood days of collecting. Back then the innocents of youth and of the hobby. I love rookies, allstar, Leader/record breaker and oddball and food items. I will never forget the joy of pulling cards out of honeycombs and vachon cakes, still some of my favorites.

I started collecting in 1978-79 but really got into it in 1981-82. From then on I tried to complete my set, collect all the leafs, collect the stars and the rest were used as traders and playing knock downs at school. I love all rookies especially of players from the 70-80's. These are the guys I loved and hated lol. My favorite set is still 81-82. I love the design, Color, picture design and the write up on the back are great.

Going into vintage you need a plan. For me it's all about the nostalgic feelings I get, I still get chills from certain cards and not always big money cards. Pick something to start with be it rookies, star players, 1st and last card in the set (usual condition sensitive due to elastic bands), checklist, allstar cards, complete a certain year. Starting out you need a direction.

As far as design goes.To me when Topps did the 1954-55 Topps set they made a winner.Bright colors, great eye appeal.Loaded with stars. Not a lot of rookie. And if rookies is your cup of tea than it is really hard to argue against the 51-52 Parkhurst set.

To me it's the Parkhurst 1961-62---I really like the background colours.Be prepared to pay big dollars for a high grade Keon.

I wish my resources/attention span allowed me to finish my 51/52 Parkies set... So many huge rookie names (Howe, Richard, Sawchuk, Harvey, Boom Boom+++) as well as a nice clean design packed into a miniature card. If you don't care about condition, it can be made into a fun and relatively affordable set (even common PSA 5s can be snagged up for $20-40, with beat up raw versions under $10 even). Also, unlike the 70s/80s checklists, just over 100 cards to chase.

I wondered what the story with that set was as I was digging through and saw all those RC tags - that makes complete sense. Otherwise there would have been some killer junior games in the late 40s!

Thanks for all of the information guys - I am sure I will end up randomly picking up spare parts here and there and then focusing down into something from there. A lot of great ideas out there - keep 'em coming!

If I had started with my Crown Royale Silhouette /99 collection, I'd be picking up more vintage RC's. Like you, I'm just concerned about counterfeits/reprints/fridge magnets, etc.

I don't have any favourite sets, but I appreciate the history behind the card and the player itself. Just about all the vintage I've picked up from the 80's is graded, but anything earlier, I'd probably be happy with a somewhat beat up raw card.

I have the most memories of 1982 O-Pee-Chee. I was a HUGE Edmonton Oilers fan and I would only keep the Oilers and Leafs cards and trade everything else. Even up to this moment, seeing those cards brings me vivid flashbacks of my childhood.

Funny you mention this Joe. I am at the point where only my SPGU supreme sets are keeping me busy. I have completed my basketball and football PC's. My Wendel clark PC is very slim now since I have pretty much gotten 99% of what i needed when I picked up the Score Recollection Auto of his.

I mentioned to Jeremy and a few closer vintage buddies that I now have turned my sights onto vintage card sets. I have picked up a lot of Topps PSA 9's for dirt cheap. Essentially I will pay for a super low grade of a card and start from there. As to what set I want to collect, I am going as far back as I can to be frank. I'd like to complete all of the older sets pre 1979 as much as I know its a pipe dream for some of the harder sets to come into.

I will start slow but highest on my bucket list of graded cards are Jackie Robinson as he is my true baseball hero. I have yet to pull the trigger on his RCs.. but I will one day...

Toodles and good luck man..

I know this is the hockey section but you may want to see this one - certainly not a NRMT grade but I think it looks great! I love the SGC cases - they really make the card pop.

Getting dizzy with all the talk of older cards lol. Hopefully there will be a lot more older cards appearing in show and tell and trade threads.
