I’m opening my first case of 18/19 OPC and have already come across a couple of surprises, the most recent of which is a retro card that instead of having the name, there appears to be a scratch off type material. Anyone come across these? I’m guessing Frank will. I’m only doing seven cases this year so it’ll be interesting to see how these fall.

Pic? Reminds me of the 80/81 cards from the description. OPC seems like a really fun break in quantity.

I just read the blank backs are part of the wrapper redemption program. They are randomly inserted into the red border packs I guess

I busted 3 cases and hit 1 Retro scratch off per case. Also hit 14 Retro Blank Backs in the 3 cases.

Blank backs are hitting way more often. Through 1.5 cases it looks like they’re four per case. Used to be two per. Black retro hotboxes are present as are unannounced marquee legends. I hit two in my first case. Zero in case two so far.

Did you scratch them? I assume it’s just their name underneath??

I didn't scratch them. Waiting for more info on them, but yeah, guessing it's just their name underneath. If these are only found in Hobby boxes, there's bound to be no more than 2-3 of each player if it encompasses the entire 600 card set.

I haven’t done the math yet for the set. Using the black rainbow might be the safest way to go, even though there are hotboxes. I’ll have to check when I’m done to get an estimate of the scratch off run.

Guess I got lucky- two cases - 8 blank backs - 2 scratch offs - one being McDavid.
Wondering what it is worth

And with that my hopes just sunk a little...

Once I’m done with my breaking tomorrow I’ll give the print run a stab. I’m thinking the run is about 3.

I wouldn’t sell now because it was unannounced and I don’t think collectors really understand the scarcity at this point. Once they do, which will take a little time, then the fun begins...congrats!

I pulled 3 Retro Black Border in each box, so by that standard, there would be:

600 x 100/3 = 20000 boxes (not taking into account hot boxes)
Roughly 1667 cases. At roughly one per case:
If these Retro Scratch Offs are all 600 cards, looking at 2.8 each.
If they only show up on cards 1-500, then you're looking at roughly 3.3 each.

This is based only on Hobby boxes. If these are found in Retail, Blasters, or Fat Packs then there would probably by a couple more of each.

1980-81 Topps. Normally, when I was collecting, I stayed away from the Topps sets. Usually had fewer cards total, and sometimes missed out on important RCs as a result. However, I loved 80-81 Topps! It was cool trying to figure out who the players were (without scratching the coating off!) before the internet made it a breeze. Kahnadah = old goat. ;)

Not that it moves the needle all that much in terms of the math, but I just got a super hit box. Nothing but black retros as the base and the usual inserts.

I just had a case with two scratch offs. Probably an anomaly.
