Am I the only one who was surprised to see these are stickers? Pretty disappointing for those who waited years only to get a sticker auto on a superstar rookie from The Cup.

Fits alongside the Gostisbehere sticker RPA in 14/15 Cup. I'd rather see the card get made than not at all at this point.

The ones posted in the S&T section do not look like stickers so if they are it blended well.

The stickers are obvious on the 2 that are on ebay right now. Kinda sucks having a sticker auto, especially one that overlaps the serial number but this is one of Pastrnak's most important cards so glad it got made!

Stickers mean that SPA, Ultimate and Premier now get pride of place.

Sticker is better then card not being made I guest. They changed the Markus Granlund Cup RPA to just a rookie auto with sticker. Not too disappointed as it not a big name player. The also included a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare Exquisite RPA as compensation.

Just the beginning, UD will eventually move to every product being produced with stickers. Everyone complaining about it will still buy from UD or buy the cards on the secondary market so it won’t matter.

Come on Billy, this isn't the first time you've seen stickers on cup rc's its the player, not UD. I expect more from our members than to make assumptions like this with the tone of authority. If you do, please provide evidence to support your assumption/theory, because you come across as being out to lunch.

If I would have told you in 2005 that The Cup, a $700 per pack product, would use photo shoot jerseys you would have said that I was out to lunch. McDavid, Matthews and conceivably every major star going forward is being featured in a ultra high end product with pieces of a jersey that they wore in a hotel room. Every manufacturer in other sports are embracing sticker autographs for high end products, especially Panini.

I may be out to lunch but I never claimed to be an authority on anything. Even if UD and it’s employees read this board or are featured on your show that doesn’t mean that we cannot discuss issues related to UD.

I’m fairly confident we will see more stickers featured in The Cup going forward. The entire industry is going that direction.

This is where I'm at with it as well.

A sticker is not ideal, but UD felt that it's the way they were able to get the card out to collectors, which is their #1 priority, so they did it. Upper Deck tried to get him to hard-sign and were not able to. It sucks, but it is what it is.

This card will still sell very well and the collectors who own them will love them for their collections. I am glad this RPA is finally availible on the secondary market after all these years.

A sticker is not better then no card IMO. It sets a terrible precedent. Either these ARP’s are on-card or not. As of now, the answer to that is “it depends”.

And the point about GU is valid. We started with a GU on card auto set and now we have event worn sticker for one of the best players in the league. It devalues the product, but to each their own.

That's stretching things quite a bit. The first year of the Cup had how many actual game used rookies, 3? 5 at most? (I honestly don't recall the exact number). 99% of the Cup rookies produced all time have been photoshoot.

And the sticker auto is because the player hasn't signed his cards in 5 years and we're now in a pandemic.

Hockey collectors are the biggest crybabies lol

Hockey collectors are actually the most compliant collectors around. Last really game changing release was the Cup 15 years ago. Heritage sets, Chrome, Prizm? No we have Young Guns, Cup ARP’s and FWA.

And I’m not crying at all, I buy basketball and baseball now because what UD is pumping out is embarrassing. Just my opinion but slapping a sticker on a key Cup RC is a joke. And if we are all good with it, expect more of it.

For myself, I've become accustomed to rookie photo-shoot/event worn patch cards over the years, so if I like/want the card then I will definitely acquire it if I need it.
If it is a Cup ARP , Premier, SPA, ICE. or Ultimate rookie patch, I am willing to add them to my collection if the patch is nice on the eyes.

However, I do draw the line at a sticker auto on a high-end product.
This is just my preference and everyone can collect what they like. The fact that the Pastrnak Cup ARP is a sticker-auto is a little disappointing for me.
Personally I would rather have a low numbered/short print parallel rookie in this case.

If you are a set completionist, then that is also a different ball of wax (not my ball o waxo), and I can respect any collector willing to do whatever is necessary to fill their set, especially if they are patch aficionados

Premier, SP Authentic, Ultimate are hard-signed... and the highest end The Cup is Sticker Auto. Someone screwed up in Upper Deck's Planning Department or have no idea on hockey products.

If I want a sticker Auto, I would just buy a cheap SPX sticker coming up. It doesn't look like people are jumping on the Cup sticker autos looking at the completed auctions. It's too bad... On the bright side, Premier is now his most desirable RPA.

You can't really plan for a player not to sign. I'm not sure about the details on why Pastranak has been so slippery but it seems if UD can get sheets of stickers signed, they could get the cards signed. Probably had the player to the table finally and just opted for him to sign a ton of stickers so they could use him in future products.

Kinda strange that he has many examples of hard signed cards from his rookie season but UD opted to go the sticker route on arguably his most desirable card.

This cheapens the product. I get the "better made than not" idea, but as Q said, SPA, Ultimate and Premier are now king. Good thing they doubled the price on The Cup, though.

I dunno. People are dying of COViD. Seems like a pile of first world problems. The original idea of invest in what you like still exists.

While he's no longer a PC of mine, I received a Jack Campbell Cup Auto Rookie redemption this week from 2013-14 with a sticker...was I happy it was a SEVEN year wait? No, but hey, into the set it goes, or maybe I'll get a premium since likely everyone else requested a replacement by now! lol
