Acquired this nice Beliveau Autothreads from ITG superlative off the 'Bay from what looks to be a reliable seller. I especially liked the fact that it was number 4 of 9 :). It arrived today and I'm somewhat miffed and concerned. Here are some pics I took out of the package from the seller. Note that the card has been removed from ITG holder and no ITG tape seals the end. That sent off warning bells in my head. Why take the card out of the original holder just to place it in another? I flipped over the card and there is the number 4 but I'm wondering what I'm sure a few of you esteemed and knowledgeable collectors already have asked yourselves at this point. Did the seller change the card numbering from a 1 to a 4? Does anyone here have a hand numbered 1 of 9 card from anything in Superlative to check it against or another 4 of 9? Please feel free to post here because I'm feeling somewhat nervous about this purchase :(. I'm leaning 60/40 with sending it back for a refund. Any ideas guys on what you would do if this was your card? Thanks in advance for comments. A real shame if this card has been altered... :( -Mike

Ugh. You should have been more careful since the picture in the listing clearly shows it isn't in any sort of top loader. Of course, it would have been nice if the seller mentioned it in the listing.

You are most likely correct that the number was "enhanced." The pen looks like it was written over the original number.

Here are other #4 cards from eBay:

Sorry bud, to me it looks faked. Did you know it wasn't in the original holder when you bought it? That's one of the biggest downfalls of hand numbered cards, idiots can find ways to try and enhance them or make them better for an extra buck or two.

Just wanted to follow this up with another comment on the seller.

Take a look at all of the seller's other Superlative closed listings. Two things jump out:

First, none of them are in top loaders.

Second, all of them (except your Beliveau) is serial numbered 1/xx.

You got hosed.

Yeah, I know Jay man, I should have been more vigilant in looking for the holder in the original auction but I guess most of only really see the card and not the holder when we are shopping on Ebay. Upon further inspection the number has two tones of black in it's creation. the straight line being darker than the 'L' making up the number 4. Damn, I'm feeling like a smuck here :o. Thank the hockey gods that I backed this purchase up with my credit card...

jaywings - I looked at the auction that he won, how can you tell it's not in the original holder? Looks like a really good scan or digital picture to me.

holy - If it was me I would be contacting him ASAP and letting him know you are not happy. It appears faked to me, and he never put in his auction that it was out of the original holder. For the amount you paid, I wouldn't accept it that way. Some will say that maybe the guy didn't know the number was tampered with since he bought or traded for it, but he surely knew it was out of the factory holder.

But all the superlative cards were numbered 1/xx except those numbered to 9 or less... so it could be 4/9 and they are all with the first number hand written. It just seems that that seller does not think the toploaders and seals should be kept intact...

I've contacted the seller and now the wait :(. I just checked all his auctions regarding Superlative that have closed and it looks like he liberated all of his cards from their holders . Oh, that's real nice. Here's an idea guy, let your buyers know this little detail as I'm sure most if not all of us wouldn't accept them this way! :|

Mike, the "4" does appear to be double stroked. You can see different color variations in the black color itself. That's sad, if that is true. :(

If you are going to resell the Superlative cards, be sure to keep them sealed. The only hand-serial numbered one I took out of its case was a card that had a broken top loader. I didn't want to send back to ITG...I knew it was going to a friend's PC (Pat ;) )... so I don't think he'll let it out of his PC anyway.

I see someone on eBay selling ITG Ultimate cards (nice emblem ones, too), that are cracked out of their BGS graded holders...that kills the re-sale value, too.

Good luck, Mike!

There's not likely going to be any help from ITG - since they've been removed from their toploaders and the ITG seal has been compromised, I think Dr. Price has gone on record saying that there will be no help from them.

Unfortunate for you, hopefully the seller does right, but I'm not hopeful

That said, a courteous email to ITG might prove fruitful. Acknowledge their disclaimer, and just leave it at that - "I figured there would be no harm done in asking" type thing. You may be surprised. Or not - either way, you lose nothing.

Well, here is my response from the seller...Anyone else experience serious scratches on the holders opening Superlative? I opened some and saw quite a few breaks at the Expo and I never saw anything that would make me want to set them loose from their loaders. Opinions? comments? I told him to send me the top loader and maybe I can talk to Dr. Price. -Mike

Hello Mike.

The Cards I Receive from the Box I Bought, All the Top Loaders Had Serious Scratches and Smudge on the Outter Plastic of each card. The Card Has Not Been Altered What so Ever, if you Want, I can send you the Original Top Loader, the Seal is Still There.

LMK.

I opened five boxes and there wasn't a noticable mark on any of my toploaders - I would be quite suspicious if I were you.

If it were me I would talk to ITG and see if they can offer you anything and if not I would be looking at this seller for some compensation - he'll probably offer you exactly jack squat but he should have made mention of it in his auction.

I have been guilty of not looking closely enough at the photos which I will certainly change now but with the way ebay protects in buyers and leaves its sellers out to dry, you should be able to get something back from this guy.

rid yourself of the problem, fiel for a chargeback through paypal if thats how you payed, and then send the card back to him. Its not worth the headache. Hopefully when he tries to resell it, everyone sees that its not in the holder. Chances are someone will still get ripped off though.

Bill

ITG probably won't do anything, I think you should just send it back and file the chargeback. If Paypal doesn't agree with you, file a fraud complaint through Visa. Good luck dude...

Oh, and I saw a whack of those Superlative packs opened also... I don't recall seeing ANY scratches.

Mike, I opened only 3 packs, but none of the loaders were scratched or damaged in any way. If it were me I wouldn't waste any more time with it. File the chargeback and be done with it. If he doesn't take it back and refund your money, administer a severe cowbell beating upon his skull.

A question to ask....does anyone here know the seller??...he's from Alberta, so I'm guessing someone here should know him?.....

Joe

I've dealt with that seller before, and he's been excellent.

As regards the toploader issue - I've opened eight packs now. A few - maybe 2 or 3 - toploaders have minor scuffing/scratching. I haven't seen any "major" damage to any.
