Leafs13 - Tyler Chatfield passes away - Donation thread for his family

Most of you have heard that Tyler Chatfield (Leafs13), who was a very active member on Beckett, and a trader with many of our members here on Hobby Insider, passed away as result of a car accident on June 7th. Tyler was married with a baby on the way. His obituary is here: LINK.

As a group, HI members are VERY highly respected for our ability to raise funds for causes and different events (i.e. the Pink Hat auction for Autism). The local Kinsmen/Kinette club in Saskatchewan is raising funds for a trust fund for Tyler's unborn child and I think it would be AWESOME if the HI gang banded together with a HUGE donation. To facilitate this, I'm starting the fund off at $100.00 and offering to use my paypal account - [email protected] to accept the donations, as well part of my commitment will be that I'll absorb all of the paypal fees. This way you can donate using your paypal balance, bank account or credit cards. Please help us raise some big money for Tyler's baby!

I'm out of paypal at the moment but have some cards I would like to donate. Can anyone think of an idea, or put together an auction possibly similar to the "pink hat" auction?? I'd love to donate some items to put op for auction and I'm sure a few others would chip in something decent.... heck, I'll even organize the darn thing if people are interested? All proceeds would be sent to Bruce... only thing is, it may take a little bit of time, but I think it could help out quite a bit due to the amazing genorosity of members around these boards. Let me know your thoughts

Hey guys...I have an idea which I'm just in the middle of typing up at the B-Site. I'll post it here shortly once I'm done.

Well, against my religion, I posted the same offer for paypal on Beckett... sometimes like/dislike for a website needs to be put aside for the greater good. There's already a movement over there to do a fundraiser of some sort as well, so hopefully this paypal and fundraiser will raise huge money for the trust fund... keep it going guys!

I didn't want to add this to the memorial thread because I would prefer we keep our memories in Tyler's honor, and this thought process separately.

For Bill, Al, Steve or Tricia - I'm not sure if this constitutes being stickied, but I hope this doesn't fall off the first page for the first couple days while everybody provides their opinions.

By now, you've read and have witnessed that Tyler was a friend, a well wisher and a trading partner of many of us. I didn't have the chance to know, or meet Tyler personally, but he was a constant positive in my mail posts, and I liked to think I paid the favor back. We had different collections altogether, and weren't fond of each other's teams, but stripped to the core, both of us were collectors -- something all of us shared in common with him.

Tyler provided many sunny days in our collecting lives, and it's time for us to give a little back to Angie and the family who will miss him both as a husband and father.

Bruce (meatiecgy/meatmancgy) has started a thread on another site to raise funds for Tyler's family, and here is my idea to help not only fundraise for Tyler's family, but to get the chance to show what he meant to us both as a collector and person.

I purchased two 36 x 72 Canadian Flags tonight. Starting in Vancouver, I would like these 2 flags to make their way across the country, stopping throughout to collect signatures from those who post here and wish to pay their last respects to Tyler.

I would ask for those of you willing to participate to sign both flags. One will go to Angie and the Chatfield family, and the other will be auctioned off on eBay, for the winner to commemorate the occasion.

While this will require a little bit of money for shipping from checkpoint to checkpoint...I will be happy to personally reimburse whomever participates as a sponsor if they do not feel comfortable paying shipping fees from one stop to the next.

I'd ideally like the flags to travel from here to the following major destinations:

-Calgary
-Edmonton?
-Saskatoon
-Winnipeg?
-Toronto

and anywhere else they need to go in between. I realize this will take a few weeks, but I also believe in our community, and believe we can make good for Tyler's family. This will give Tyler's family something to look upon in seeing how much of an impact he had on all of us.

For anybody who will be unable to leave comments because of location (anybody in the US, or away from the major cities the flag will travel to,) one of the requests I have is that everybody take pictures and send them to me at signing stations. At the end of it, I'm going to have a scrapbook created with all our submitted pictures, and any letters and well wishes you wish to pass on (this is where anybody who is unable to sign the flag can leave their comments) and I'll include it with our flag.

Before I go into additional detail about signing and such, I need to know I have some support in undertaking this very intensive project and it will not be all for naught.

I am all for any ideas that will help the family. As i was discussing with Bruce earlier tonight a gentleman from my town died in a very similar instance leaving a very young family. His daughter being in my little brothers grade 2 class (yes there is a HUGE age gap). The town and school community rallied around the family, but the hardest thing I ever had to do was explain to my little brother why his friends daddy was never going to come home. He could not understand the concept, nor did he want to. I am all for anything anybody comes up with to help out this family. I see no reason why multiple fundraising efforts can not be organized all together. This is a true tragedy and each one of us can offer a little something. I would love to help out by allowing members to send me some items to auction off in one large lot and send the funds to Bruce. I love your idea Matt as it has more than just a monetary value, it shows that people really care and his family will have proof of that. I'm in, and hopefully we can get a few fundraising things going.

After speaking with Tyler's friend (Shaun Gettis) who is cluing up some of the loose ends on his behalf I have decided to proceed with starting an auction to raise funds for Tyler's child's trust. While I didn't know him personally, I did make numerous deals with him and always found him incredibly easy to deal with ... as I have some time on my hands right now, it is really the least I can do.

What I am looking for at this point is donations of cards from collectors, and in the event someone wants to step up and volunteer to pay the shipping and/or the eBay fees that would also be greatly appreciated. I will want to have all of the cards committed and in hand before I start the auction, so the sooner we can get going - the better. If you would like to pledge cards with a restriction (say, only if the auction goes or $1,000 or something) then that is perfectly acceptable, I just need to know in advance and would still prefer to have the card up front and return it if needed.

Hey guys,

The flag will be available for signing tomorrow in Vancouver at Collector's Den in Metrotown (Time TBD) and I'm going to see if Derek and Dave will let me stop by their place so people nearby Mojo's in North Van can come in and sign if they wish to.

From here, the flags will be going in care of Joseph (Pensrock93) to Toronto for the show next week.

After that, Curt (Gabbyguy) has asked for the chance to sign it, and after how highly he spoke of Tyler, I'd like to honor his request. Joe and Ryan...please let me know if you'd like me to send you some cash to ship it down to Minnesota after it's done at the show

After Minnesota...if you've got a big group of people wanting to sign Heidi, I think we can arrange to have it sent to you. (Heidi/Lucky20 asked for it to be shipped to LA/Las Vegas afterward)

Vancouver, if you can't sign tomorrow, do not worry because the flags will return in my hands at some point for the auction itself, and may return throughout. Our final signing stop may turn out to be the Bonsor show in August...who knows.

August you say? Since we've now got a couple of collector trust funds being set up for Tyler's family, I see no reason why we need to rush this process, and am willing to have it take a good portion of the summer up to get the names and pictures we need since many of you have expressed interest in adding your name.

I didnt have much but made a small donation. Very sad tragedy and my prayers are with his family!!!

Bruce, just sent my contribution, that's really sad to hear. Hopefully the generosity of this board will bring hope to a family in need.

Your generosity so far has been AMAZING guys... I'll get a running total over the weekend, but we're near $1000 already Way to go!
