Wow, I'm kinda surprised that there hasn't been a thread on him yet. Anyways, I decided to post it in the hobby section because I'm kinda curious. Do you think that his one game stint as back-up goalie in the NHL warrants some cardboard? I personally think that it would be great for the hobby and would probably go after a few of his cards myself. I just wanted to know your thoughts on this and what the possibilities of seeing some Tom Fenton cardboard is.

Thanks, Andrew

Not likely - since the contract was on an Amateur Try Out basis. Nazem Kadri played in his one game last year on the same basis, on emergency recall, but he was also drafted by the team, whereas he and other previous emergency goalies were literally brought in off the street.

Fenton's story is not the first of its kind, here are a few examples I have found of similar situations.

Chris Levesque for Vancouver Canucks in 2003
Brett Leonhardt for Washington Capitals in 2008
Aaron Sorochan for Edmonton Oilers in 2008
Nathan Deobald for Edmonton Oilers in 2010
Alexander Pechurskiy for Pittsburgh Penguins in 2010
Torrie Jung for Edmonton Oilers (notice a trend?) in 2009
Shawn Simpson for Washington Capitals in 1990

If ITG could sign these players I think a subset in a product like BTP would be the perfect place for these guys. Call the subset something clever and each card would have a little write up explaining each goalies situation and the outcome.

"Chris Levesque for Vancouver Canucks in 2003"

I went to this game and it actually is probably one of the most memorable games I have ever been to.

Naslund got four goals in a 4-3 OT win, but during the game, Johan Hedberg got hurt and it looked as though Levesque was going to go in. The big screen showed him, and he looked scared to death. Then the crowd started chanting "UBC, UBC, UBC" (where Levesque played). It was awesome. The players were even laughing about it on the bench. Sadly, Hedberg got up and played the rest of the game ( I think he actually broke his hand/wrist and missed games after that).

This would be a totally cool idea for a set in a card release. I think I read somewhere that Levesque was given the jersey he wore that day as a memento of the game. There ya go Bulldog24...hunt him down and get the jersey for the set :)

Another one was Rob McVicar, in 05-06. This was when Cloutier went down with injury early on, and Auld played most of the season's games. McVicar rode the pine for most of his 2-3 games in Vancouver.

He did, however, make it into action in one game and played 3 minutes - without seeing the puck once. No saves, not shots against, no nothing.

McVicar, as I learned today, is now a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Saskatchewan.

And for the record, McVicar has 66 cards from that year (including press plates).

As far as i can tell, Pechurskiy is the only guy from that list to get put into an NHL set. He's also the only player listed there who actually played minutes in the game, rather than just sitting on the bench.

While it's true that Pechurskiy is indeed Penguins property, he didn't have an NHL contract on the books when he played -- just an amateur tryout. The same is true for two skaters that I know of -- David Sloane of the Philadephia Flyers, and Geoff Kinrade of the Ottawa Senators. Both earned 09-10 RCs based on playing in an NHL game on an amateur tryout contract (Kinrade's was with the Lightning at the tail end of the 08-09 season).

So here's the best I can figure for now:

* If you have an NHL contract and just sit on the bench for a game, you're eligible for cards.
* If you don't have an NHL contract, you're still eligible for cards as long as you actually play minutes in the game, but just sitting on the bench doesn't count.

Clint, Al, UD guys, BP -- that seem accurate? Are these rules actually set-in-stone or do you just make them up as you go? (I should note that Panini's made RCs of Pechurskiy, but UD has not)

I believe McVicar was actually a Canucks draft pick who had a pro contract on the books, which would mean there's no question he was eligible for cards. Of course, earning 66 cards for a 3-minute NHL career is a classic example of UD rookie overkill...

Here's his career stats.

Both Panini and UD have made Pechurski rookies. Panini, however, has made Brad Thiessen rookies, who I can not recall dressing in a game.

Oh, you're right about Pechurski(y). UD and Panini are using two different spellings of his name!

Brad Thiessen is under a pro contract, so he falls into the "first category" I used.

I don't remember him ever riding the pine though. I guess they called him up during their Stanley Cup run, but he never dressed.

As another example... Jordan Sigalet, who I collect, played exactly 1 minute in a Bruins game and managed to get himself a bunch of RC's made.

Jordan White is the latest to join the club -- dressing for the San Jose Sharks last night against the Vancouver Canucks. White is a UBC student.

Fenton will have cards in BTP.
I copied this from another thread

Might be his only card including autos.

Somewhere out there this kid's parents are beside themselves with giddy pride. Sort of cool really.
