I was going to wait until an upcoming mail post to share this info but I figured it would make for a cluttered S&T and decided to post it now.
As some of you may know my "hobby within a hobby" is to do research and dig up information about interesting jerseys and memorabilia I see used in cards. In a time of patch faking and memorabilia fraud it gives me peace of mind to know that the real thing goes into my favourite cards.
My latest jersey of interest has been the Nathan MacKinnon game-worn jersey Panini is using in their last two products: Prime and National Treasures.
Chris (vegaspuck) revealed a while back that Panini acquired the Adam Foote jersey retirement night sweater. Knowing Colorado is a Meigray team I assumed they preordered it or bought it from Meigray directly but it actually went down a little different.
While watching Prime breaks on YouTube I came across this video from the National, where Chris happens to be sitting with the breaker and commenting on the pulls and what went in to making certain cards.

Fast forward to the 11:35 mark to see this SICK MacKinnon Prime Colors patch pulled:
Chris comments on the card and jersey throughout the rest of the video and mentions that Panini won the jersey through an NHL auction.
Knowing that it was pretty easy to find the auction for the jersey itself:
http://auctions.nhl.com/iSynApp/auctionDisplay.action?auctionId=81993
Besides the pretty penny Panini paid to win the jersey - $4,595
- you can also see that only the one set was worn during the entire game (no different jerseys for first/second/third period or anything like you'd see in an All-star or Winter Classic game) and the Meigray tag of course matches up with the Prime Authentics card Panini previewed prior to release:
The game was played on November 2nd, 2013 against the Montreal Canadiens. MacKinnon had 16 minutes of ice time and scored his second NHL goal, which turned out to be the game winner, while wearing this jersey.
Here are a few shots of MacKinnon during the game:
I didn't stop there. I sent an email to Meigray customer service asking if any other MacKinnon rookie jerseys were sold to card companies besides the one Panini acquired in the NHL auction, information I know they've provided before when asked. Barry Meisel replied:
Knowing this, and knowing Panini is wrapping up their time in hockey after NT, we can be pretty sure that this jersey used by Panini will be the only trustworthy game-worn MacKinnon stuff for quite a while. I can comfortably say this will most likely be the ONLY rookie year jersey used in any cards, so get your fill out of Prime and NT!
If you do see MacKinnon "game-worn" stuff in early UD products, like UD Game Jersey for example, BE WEARY. I've noticed in the past UD making Game Jersey cards of the previous seasons' big rookies and wondering if they really did get a rookie gamer or if they were just passing off their remaining event worn stuff as game worn. We have it on good authority that no other card companies got a MacKinnon rookie gamer from Meigray this season so I would be cautious on anything you see before AT LEAST late next season.
Honestly, I'm probably not going to trust anything from UD at all. Everything goes on behind tightly closed doors and they never comment on where their jerseys come from like Panini does so who knows that they're using. With Panini finished I won't trust another MacKinnon game-worn card unless ITG starts making cards of him again down the road.
Anyway, I'm very impressed that Panini was able to make rookie year game-worn cards of the biggest star of the dual RC class and I hope collectors appreciate exactly how significant it is to have stuff like this out in the hobby. I hope you enjoyed the information
NOTE:
MacKinnon has both GAME-worn and EVENT-worn cards in the Prime Colors set, make sure you know what you're bidding on if you decide to go after the game-worn stuff.
In the Rookie Prime Colors set (EVENT-worn) MacKinnon has LOGO (#/25) and PATCH (#/33). He is card #1 in those checklists, in his photo he is looking to the right, and the Dual RC class logo at the top right is purple like the color scheme of the card.
In the standard Prime Colors set (GAME-worn) MacKinnon has PATCH (#/14) and NUMBER (#/12). He is card #101 in those checklists, in his photo he is looking to the left, and the Dual RC class logo is smaller and in black and white in the top right corner.
Obviously the back of the card will say if it is game worn or event worn but I noticed in some of the listings the back of the card isn't scanned or it isn't mentioned in the title or description. I've seen some event worn patches outsell the game-worn ones and maybe some bidders don't realize the difference between the two versions. Make sure you know what you're bidding on!
NOTE #2:
The nameplate from this jersey was used in the Genuine Marks set, so autographed letters are out there too.
NOTE #3:
It looks like Panini saved at least the Avalanche logo and big back numbers for NT, which makes me wonder if they had enough patch material left over to perhaps make all his RPA's game-worn also

Not by Meigray, Kevin. Only the one to which you referred.
