Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of May-August 2021. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 16 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Also stay tuned for the top 15 cards from the summer at the end, so without further adieu, lets get to it!
Starting off with some lower end stuff;
2005 Oversized Crosby Season League Champs
Starting off this thread is an odd ball rookie year Crosby promotional card sent out by upper deck around the holiday season. I'm not sure who exactly received these promo cards but, given its from his rookie year technically, I had to pick one up.
2005-06 ITG Spring Expo Crosby (8/10)
While many don't care much for the fall expo stamped cards, I don't mind picking them up every now and then, especially if its a rookie year Crosby numbered to 10!
2005-06 US SPx Chris Campoli RC Gold (19/25)
A seldom seen rookie card from the journeyman defenseman, I was glad to win the auction for this card at a very affordable price.
2005-06 UD Victory Silver /250 and Gold /100
I have had some great success recently in finding cards for my silver set, each numbered to 250. My personal favourites from the lot are the Yzerman and Gerber cards. Anahiem really needs to bring back the original jersey design, along with the logo! My only new additions from the gold set were Peca and Jovanovski.
2005-06 ITG Oh Canada Cody Bass Silver /50
This is my first card from this series, a dual multi-colored jersey and patch, from a once very promising Senators prospect.
2005-06 UD Beehive Matte Parallel Seabrook RC (2/25)
A tough parallel to find of the 3-time Cup champion and gold medalist, the texture on these cards is quite appealing. The matte border gives the appearance of a frame for the card built within it.
2005-06 UD Ultimate Gold Rookies Kanko and Petiot /25
Next is a pair of Kings prospects parallel cards. Admittedly, I don't recall much from these two players, though I believe Petiot spent some time in the Leafs pipeline, while Kanko finished his career with 10 NHL games played.
2005-06 Fleer Ultra Multicolored Jerseys (Difference Makers, Rookie Uniformity, Scoring Kings and Super Six)
As many of you know, I love finding common jersey cards with multicored swatches from the 05-06 season. It adds a bit of rarity and aesthetics to, what would normally be, an unassuming find. This is exactly the case here with this lot that I purchased, featuring dual colored swatches from across the four jersey card sets from Fleer Ultra in the 05-06 release. The card which stands out from this lot is the Super Six Patrick Roy, this is the only dual colored piece I have seen in all my years of collecting. I would love to find a triple someday if it exists out there.
2005-06 NHL Generations Triple Multi-colored Jerseys
I love finding mutlicored swatch versions of these cards, along with the duals, though the triples seem tougher to find. I was lucky enough to pick up three from the same seller, with the star of the show being the Sundin-Forsberg-Zetterberg card, which depicts a dual colored swatch for both the Forsberg and Zetterberg.
2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects Hot Materials Multicolored Jerseys
Another lot of jersey cards, with two tough to find triple colored swatches on the Paille and Nystrom. I really like the Paille because it is from a throw back jersey, as buffalo was still using the goat head jerseys right after the lockout.
2005-06 UD Trilogy Lindros three clr Jersey
What I like about this card is it features Lindros from his short stints in two major markets; Toronto and New York.
2005-06 UD Shooting Stars Elias 3-clr Jersey
The only three colour version that I have seen to date, this card depicts an evenly spaced red-white and black of the Devil's sniper.
2005-06 UD MVP Materials Jarkko Ruutu 3-colour Jersey
A nice piece from the MVP materials set, featuring Tuomo's older brother Jarkko from his time with the Canucks. This piece would have come from the throw backs they wore pre-NHL lockout.
2005-06 UD Powerplay Specialists Jersey Murray (3-colour)
One of the sharper and underrated releases from the 05-06 lineup, this card displays an almost centered swatch of the maritimer.
2005-06 UD Black Diamond Jersey Single (Iginla) and Dual (Primeau)
Next is a pair of Black Diamond jersey cards. The first is a 3-clr Iginla, a tough feat given the small size of the jersey window. The second is a dual jersey card of Keith Primeau, numbered to 25 copies.
2005-06 UD Trilogy Lupul Jersey and Autograph (6/10)
I recently took a trip through the mountains and southern Alberta, and stopped at multiple hobby shops along the way. This card I found in Calgary, at Collector's Books & Cards. I had a great time speaking with the owner for a while before closing a deal on the Lupul.
2005-06 UD Ice Cool Threads Patch Parise (23/50)
This was another trip find during my time in Calgary. This Parise was acquired from Andy's Sports Cards and Collectibles, I had a nice time chatting before purchasing this card. I believe he pulled it himself back in the day, which is a nice bonus for confidence and authenticity purposes.
2005-06 The Cup Rookies Prucha and Meszaros /199
Two more cup rookies for my set, I'm especially happy to add this particular Prucha, as it features a bright red-white and blue Rangers patch. For those unfamiliar with this set, the Prucha was notoriously difficult to find in three-colors, and there a very few out there. The Meszaros is a 4-colour Sens patch, not an easy find in its own right.
2005-06 Spezza Collection
This might be the third partial Spezza collection that I have acquired just this year. It shows just how many die-hard collectors he once had when he was in his prime between 2005-2010 with the Senators.
A few notable cards for me include a triple Ultimate jersey with Hasek and Heatley /25, the black diamond autos /50 and /25, the SP Game used Significance gold auto /25 and the ITG spectrum mutlicored jersey which features Kovalchuk and a pre-NHL John Tavares /10.
One card that fell just short of the top 15 for me was the priority signings from the 2005 fall expo, numbered 10/10. I would love to start adding more of these cards as I really like the design they used and the foiled sticker auto.
2005-06 SP Game Used Rookie Exclusives Parallel Steen (5/5) PSA 8
I am quickly compiling quite the Steen rookie year collection in my quest to find low numbered parallels from 05-06. This Steen, numbered to only 5, is also graded a PSA 8.
2005-06 The Cup Scripted Swatches Ryder (2/25)
The designs from the 05-06 cup production were top notch, and this series was no different. I was ecstatic to add a 3-clr Canadiens patch with an on-patch auto. I hope to add more of the scripted swatch cards in the future!
2005-06 UD Game Patches Guerin and Kovalchuk /15
One new addition to my set, along with a patch upgrade, gives me 68 unique patches from the series 1 set. The Guerin displays a nice 3-clr patch from his time with the Boston Bruins, while the Kovalchuk is a patch upgrade for me. The patch can be narrowed down to the powder blue Thrasher's alternate jerseys which has the "ATLANTA" word mark down one shoulder.
Now onto the top 15..
#15. 2005-06 UD McDonald's Autograph Rick Nash (9-50)
The first autograph from this series in my collection, these autos were redemptions and incredibly difficult to pull. Though numbered to 50, the likelihood that all 50 were redeemed are slim to none.
#14. 2005-06 UD Ultimate Gold RC Duncan Keith #141 (24-25)
At number 14 we have a gold parallel from the Ultimate series of Duncan Keith. Likely a Hall-of-Famer when all is said and done, I look forward to watching him play alongside McDavid and Draisaitl this year with the Oilers.
#13. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Impact Rainbow Parallel Daniel Alfredsson #60 (4/11)
As stated earlier, one of the most underrated releases from the year had some attractive parallels and low numbered chase cards. The impact parallels mirrored the base cards (1-90) with each numbered to the player's jersey number. The Alfredsson is about as limited as it can get, with only 11 cards in the print run.
#12. 2005-06 UD Victory Black Jamie Langenbrunner #229 (5/5)
It has been quite a while since I had the chance to add a card to this ongoing set. With the availability of these cards drying up over the years, every find is pretty special. This one is no different, and I'm glad to add it to the collection. I now sit at 68/300 cards or roughly 23% complete.
#11. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Specialty Patches Iginla and Dumont /5
Given the print run on these patches, finding them can be few and far in between. The Dumont, featuring a nice 3-colour Hasek-era patch, was found on COMC, while the Iginla was brought to my attention by a certain Turco collector. Huge thanks for helping me out as it had slipped through my daily searches.
#10. 2005-06 UD The Cup Noble Numbers (Giguere/Turco) and (Lundqvist/Miller)
At number 10 there is a pair of goaltending duals from the Noble Numbers inaugural release. The first are two western conference main-stays during the 2000's, both displaying 4-colour pieces. The Giguere can be traced back to a word mark jersey worn pre-lockout, while the Turco is from the mid-2000's era Stars, a design I would like to see used again in the modern NHL. An added bonus is the player images feature the correct jersey that was used in the patch window, something I wish card companies did more often, especially with alternate or third jerseys. The dual Lundqvist/Miller is fitting to show this year in particular, as both have officially retired this offseason and a new era of goaltending can take the reigns. The 2021-22 season will be the first without Miller and Lundqvist since the 2001-02 season.
#9. 2005-06 UD HG Glossy /10
A fairly successful few months for the high gloss set, with five new additions. Aucoin, Krajicek, Zednik, Saprykin and most notably Dominik Hasek. The Hasek was a card I missed out on a few years back and had not seen another copy since. I jumped at the opportunity to add this one, though it was held by a US based seller that did not want to ship it north of the border. I got some great help for facilitating the deal from a fellow member so a big thanks to David if you read this! Its awesome to cross the Hasek off the need list. With these additions I now have 235/487 or roughly 48% complete.
#8. 2005-06 UD SP Authentic Rareified Rookies Andy Wozniewski (1/1)
Its not every day that you find cards from the Rareified Rookies set, each one is numbered 1 of 1. I had no idea this card was being offered in a fb group so a huge thanks to the member that tagged me in the post. The help is always appreciated and a big reason I am able to add to my collection consistently.
#7. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects En Fuego Shield Kevin Dallman #215 (1/1)
A great card of a prospect whose career only spanned 3 years, I love the design that was used in the En Fuego parallels. He split his rookie season between the Blues and Bruins, so the photo shoot patch could be from either team.
#6. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Memorabilia Emblem Attic Gold Doug Harvey (1/1)
Among my favorite cards from the 2005-06 season, vintage emblem patch pieces never get old. This card features a 3-colour Canadiens piece from their glory days, and numbered to only one copy, there aren't many acquisitions that beat that in my books.
#5. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used By The Letter Kovalchuk (9/9)
One of the most eye-popping patches in my collection, this Kovalchuk piece features a large 3-colour nameplate from the "K" in his name. The Thrasher's jersey produced some great swatches and patches over the years, and this is no exception. Being limited to only nine copies also helps with making this card extra special.
#4. 2005-06 The Cup Black Parallel Giguere #1 and Balastik RC #151 (1/1)
A pulled the trigger on a pair of ultra rare cup black parallel pieces, each numbered 1/1. The first, Giguere, is particularly unique as it is card #1 in the set. Its also my first base black parallel, I owned two other cards from the set previous to this but both are rookies. The second acquisition is the Balastik RC, a largely forgotten NHL player but special to me nonetheless. I missed out on the initial listing a few years back but I wasn't going to let it get away a second time. Incredibly happy to add these two cards.
#3. 2005-06 The Cup Dual NHL Autographed Shields Staal/Gerber (1/1)
The greatest find on my Alberta trip, I found this card in Edmonton at Wayne's Sports Card & Collectibles. I wasn't really expecting to find anything this rare on display but to my surprise there it was. We struck a deal and I had a great experience talking to the owners there, I would recommend visiting if you have time and are in Edmonton. This was my first dual auto shield card from this set, and from the Stanley Cup winners from 2006 no less!
#2.2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Memorabilia Triple Autographs Gold Svatos/Phaneuf/Ovechkin PSA 8 (1/1)
Its not very often, especially these days, that I come across an Ovechkin rookie year card and win an auction. This card comes the ITG release, featuring rookie year autographs of Marek Svatos, Dion Phaneuf and Alexander Ovechkin. It was at some point, cracked out of its original holder and graded a PSA 8. The original label was kept on the reverse of the label, which I thought was a nice touch. The gold versions were each limited to one copy, making this among the rarest Ovechkin pieces I own.
And finally, the reason for the title..
#1. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate Memorabilia Lumbergraphs Turk Broda (1/1)
Among the most incredible cards in all of my collection, this card features Turk Broda's autograph on a stick piece from his time with the Maple Leafs. Growing up a Leaf's fan and also a goaltender in my spare time, this card is definitely not one I ever dreamed of owning. Broda, a 5-time Cup Champion and 2-time Vezina winner, passed away in 1972 so its safe to assume his autograph is not easy to find. I will surely treasure this piece as one of the cornerstones of my 2005-06 collection. And there you have it, the number one card of the summer!
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what September will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great long weekend everyone!
