1979-80 OPC Case Find

Wow - I heard this today but this was the first time seeing the story. Those boxes look like they are in mint shape, which I didn’t expect.

20 Gretzkys on average in a case… that could all be miscentered or have gum glued to them. Do you buy this and sit on it or buy it to open them? And should they have auctioned it off as separate boxes?

Man, I wish I had to answer tough questions like that. Wild!

Opening this case would be fun but foolish. The rarity/collectible value of the case as is far outstrips anything in it.

This. Unless this ends up some rich guy's play toy, these should be kept as is. This might be the single greatest 1/1 in our hobby today.

After Jeremy buys the case (and swears to NEVER open it), he should track down the guy who bought the 1986/87 Fleer Basketball case last year and acquire that one as well.

Then put them side by side, on a shelf in his card room, just behind where he sits for his podcast-thingys... that would look AWESOME.

exactly this

With the horror stories we’ve seen even from “authenticated” boxes/cases, who spends that much money without knowing for certain what’s inside those boxes? It could be Mash, or Starsky & Hutch, or…..

The case has already been opened at BBCE's offices, contents verified and authenticated, and then re-sealed with their shrink-wrapping.

It's the real deal.

I am glad in my life time that a case of this was found like that.
It makes my heart jump and skip a beat when I watched the video...
I am glad there are things like this in the world that make me smile as much as I did when I bought my first pack at a 4 or 5 year old.

If I were to buy this I would open 1 box to see if there is a Gretzky in there, which there should be at least one in every box, just to ensure it hasn't been tampered with and then save the other 15 boxes.

Apparently there should be 27 Gretzky Rookies inside a case. Why 27? Not sure.., if there are 16 boxes that's not even 1.5 Gretzkys per box so that is a weird number. Maybe there were for certain the same amount of Gretzky RC's in each 16 box case?

Still, insane. I am sure there are more out there but just not uncovered or discovered yet.

Cool.

14 cards per pack x 48 packs = 672 cards per box,

672 cards divided by 396 in the set = 1.7 sets per box,

1.7 sets per box x 16 boxes in the case = 27.15 Gretzky RCs

I watched the video posted here in the thread, is there another video showing what’s inside the inner boxes? I’m just saying for that kind of money, we have seen BBCE authenticated boxes and cases that did not contain what they say it did.

hmmmmmmm

Im no expert but with due respect I don't trust BBCE nor most sealed wax more than 10+ years old especially with the holy grail chase card being in it

I love this response. There are a lot of folks insisting that it's worth opening for the chance at a PSA10 (Last sale PSA10 Gretzky $3.75M USD).

"Tell me you know nothing about vintage O-Pee-Chee wax without telling me you know nothing about vintage O-Pee-Chee wax." The likelihood of anything better than PSA8 is LOW. Of a 10? ROFL.

Also regarding BBCE: I hope for their sake that they were abundantly cautious in certifying this one. Their rep cannot afford another fiasco.
