Verified Trader,
Hello,
First and foremost I hope everyone had a happy holidays with friends and family as we say good bye to 2022 and set our sights on 2023. This past year was full of new opportunities and experiences personally. I also had a pretty successful year hobby-wise as well, so without further adieu, here are my top 22 cards of 2022!
22. 2005-06 UD McDonald's
One of my favorite products to collect, McDonald's hockey cards will always hold a special place in my collection, especially from 05-06 and 06-07. The redemption cards were quite rare and the stated print runs are likely inaccurate to the number that were redeemed. I was happy to add one Goalie Gear card of Hasek (46/50), Iginla and Thornton Chasing the Cup /100, and NHL Patches of Theodore and Naslund /25.
#21. 2005-06 UD High Glossy /10 - 18 new additions
Yet another huge year for my HG set with 18 new additions! While each and every card is rare, unique and has a story, my personal favorite would be the Mike Green RC. For those who were Caps fans from 2005-2015, you would have fond memories of Mike Green quarterbacking the powerplay alongside Ovechkin and Backstrom. He was essentially John Carlson before John Carlson haha. The interesting thing about his rookie is that he never had a Young Gun produced, but was rather included in the base set similar to the older sets of the past. To my knowledge, this is the last player whose rookie card was part of the base set and not part of the distinct rookie crop found towards the end of modern sets. This was among the top cards left to find and I am ecstatic to add it to the collection. 18 new additions brings my total to 262 High Gloss cards, or 54% complete!
#20. SP Authentic UD SP Limited Partial Set /100
This past year I had a unique opportunity to acquire a partially completed SP Limited set, with each card numbered to 100. The first 100 card were parallels for the regular base cards, with key players of Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux, Brodeur etc. The next 30 cards featured active star players labeled SP Notables. The first 130 cards were included in my purchase.
The next 70 or so cards feature the now popular SP Future Watch Patch Autograph parallels. While the set I purchased was missing the most of the big rookies, I still acquired excellent examples of Getzlaf (4-color), Vanek (4-color), Phaneuf (4-color) and Koivu (2-color). There were 51 FWA patch cards included with my purchase.
The next 66 cards featured non patch and autographed Future Watch rookies, numbered to 100 with an awesome black background. I guess these players were so far down on the depth chart, they were long shots to make noise in the big leagues. However, given how deep this rookie crop was, there were still some gems to be found here, including Corey Crawford, Pekka Rinne, Mike Green and the still active Mark Giordano. 60 of the 66 cards were included with my purchase.
While I'm in no rush to complete this set right away, I have an excellent foundation to start filling in the missing cards of the next few years to complete the set! The partial set can be viewed in my Flickr album here
#19. 2005-06 The Cup Gold RPA Steen #174 (6/10)
Every since picking up his Cup Black and Platinum Rookie Parallels, this card has been on my chase list. By far the most aesthetically pleasing of the three, this card features a beautiful 3 color patch and crisp, unfaded signature. Can't ask for much more of a card this rare, with only 10 copies made.
#18. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Set (1-190) + Update Set (191-240)
At number 18 is a complete set of SP Game Used Base including the update set which was packed into the rookie update product. I had previously never owned a copy of either the Crosby or Ovechkin rookies so to add the whole set in one shot is a huge plus for me. All the rookies in this set are numbered to 999. Notable rookies in the update set include Corey Crawford, Pekka Rinne and Mike Green.

#17. 2005-06 UD Trilogy Set (1-220)
Next up is a complete Trilogy base and rookie set, with the rookies all being numbered to 999. This is another case in which I had never previously owned a copy of the Crosby or the Ovechkin rookies. What is pretty unique about this set is the use of the thick plexi-glass cards from numbers 90-170, these cards being numbered to 599. Great use of greats from the past including Howe, Gretzky and Patrick Roy.

#16. 2005-06 UD Shooting Stars Set (49 cards)
This next set was a unique offering of the full 49 cards from the Shooting Stars subset in UD series 1. The previous owner took great pride in finding unique jersey pieces which made for lots of multicolored swatches. The toughest of which was the incredibly rare SSP Jaromir Jagr, featured here in two colours. Another interesting note about this set was that the Rick Nash was never produced as the checklist states. Instead UD opted to replace him with Glen Murray, the only issue is that Murray was already included. This resulted in two different Glen Murray cards in this set, one using a Bruins jersey and the other using his 2004 NHL All Star jersey for the swatch pieces.

#15. 2005-06 Fleer Ultra Rookie Uniformity Set (60 cards)
The next set is from the same seller as the Shooting Stars set. This set however might be even more impressive than the last. The Rookie Uniformity 60-card set features a 3-colour Ovechkin and the only two colour Lundqvist card I have ever seen.

#14. 2005-06 The Cup Rookies /199 - 22 RPAs
At 14 we have a collection of 05-06 RPAs, each numbered to 199. I'm pretty particular with cards I decide to purchase, requiring unique patches, so its not often I pick these up. My personal favourites are the 5-color Seabrook, 5-color Suter and the 4-color Koivu. Interesting fact, Crosby, Ovechkin and Koivu were the only rookies which featured game used memorabilia. I believe all other Cup RPAs ever made feature photo shoot memorabilia.
EDIT: #13B: 2005-06 Fleer Ultra Rookie Uniformity Patch Crosby RUP-SC (34/35) BGS 9
Well, I can't believe I forgot this card when making this list, so I am adding it here. I had been looking for a copy of this card for years and I finally pulled the trigger this year. A beautiful 3-color rookie year patch of a consensus top 10 player all time, and the pride of my hometown province of Nova Scotia!
#13. 2005-06 Ultimate Premium Patches /35 - Gretzky, Brodeur, Hejduk, Hasek, Naslund and Kovalchuk
The Ultimate Premium Patches cards are among my favorite cards produced in 05-06. The series featured a great mix of rookies, modern stars and all time greats. In 2022 I added six new cards, all yielding some top notch patches. The Gretzky is a tough find, especially with a three colour patch. This was at the top of my want list, along with Crosby and Ovie. Other notable patches include an incredible shoulder patch of the Thrashers Kovalchuk, and an old school 95-96 Canucks Alternate "faded" jersey piece of Markus Naslund.
#12. 2005-06 UD Black Diamond Onyx #185 Howe (1/1)
This find was quite unexpected, scrolling past it numerous times during my daily search on ebay. Once I read the title and checked the reverse card scan, I got to work negotiating a deal. Its safe to say this is now my best Onyx card from the set. As a bonus, I also added the Ruby and Gold parallels of Howe earlier in the year. I'll just have to find the Emerald and base to complete the rainbow!
#11. 2005-06 UD Beehive Matte Parallel Crosby RC (8/25) BGS 9
I have been after this card for years! While I have seen about 3-4 copies of this card over the years, the asking prices were quite high and I had to pass or was outbid on all my previous attempts. Finally this card opened at auction and I was quite happy with the final price tag, especially with it having a high grade of BGS 9. I now own the Base, Red, Blue, Gold and Matte Crosby rookies and I am closing in on his beehive rookie print run, only missing a few autographs of his from that product.
#10. 2005-06 UD Victory Black Parallels Lemieux #155 (1/5)
The 05-06 black parallel cards are found on numerous "Need Lists" for any player PC, and given the collectability of Lemieux, I feel incredibly fortunate to have acquired this card. A HOF player and on the mount Rushmore of all time hockey players by a majority of historians, the black border compliments the penguins uniform beautifully. I am not holding my breath in finding another so I was not going to let this card slip from my grasp, I'm ecstatic to have it in my set.
#9. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Specialty Patches Martin Brodeur SP-MB (1/5)
At number nine is an incredibly rare Martin Brodeur Specialty Patch from the powerplay series numbered 1/5. This is the only copy I have ever seen to date and its unlikely another will surface given the number of Brodeur collectors there are out there. What's particularly interesting about the patch on this Brodeur is the heat pressed material which makes up the patch. Upon doing some research, the Devils used this on some of their early 90's green and red jerseys, which matches Brodeur's rookie season. So its likely this card features early Brodeur memorabilia, possibly even a rookie jersey piece.
#8. 2005-06 The Cup Legendary Cuts Doug Harvey LC-DH (2/5)
Having added the King Clancy late in 2021, I really never thought I would see another card from this set for years! Never in my widest dreams did I believe I would be adding another card from that set, but here we are. At number 8 of the count down is the Doug Harvey cut autograph, the defenseman who held the blueline for the great Canadiens teams of the 50s. Both the Clancy and Harvey are both numbered to only 5 copies.
#7. 2005-06 UD Trilogy Honorary Patches Gretzky HP-WG (3/10)
This is quite the find for any Gretzky collector, especially with a 3-colour Kings patch. Only 10 copies were produced, and this one was only the second one I had ever seen. As Gretzky game used material becomes more limited, I'm sure I will look back and be grateful that I acquired this card in 2022.
#6. 2005-06 UD SP Authentic Sign of the Times Quad Gretzky/Taylor/Vachon/Dionne Q-GTVD (6/10)
I didn't have to think too hard about bidding on this card, given it featured a nice Gretzky autograph on a card that featured him in a Kings "Burger King" jersey! It also does not hurt that he is accompanying by some incredible legends in Taylor, Vachon and Dionne. Definitely a chase card for any Gretzky or Kings collector.
#5. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Extra Significance Gold Parallel Gretzky/Howe (2/10) PSA 7
Previous to this acquisition I had never owned a Wayne Gretzky autograph, and what a way to make an entrance to my collection. This card is actually a parallel card to the regular Significance dual auto numbered to 25, with this being the gold version /10. Any card featuring both Gretzky and Howe would highlight any collection, and this one is no different.
#4. 2005-06 Fleer Difference Makers Patch Alexander Ovechkin DMP-AO (7/25)
At number four we have an incredible rookie year patch of my favorite player. Having Ovie cards in my 2022 year in review thread is quite appropriate given the year he had, continuing to score goals and now sits only second to Gretzky on the all-time scoring list. For those keeping track, he now has 803 goals and needs 92 goals to sit atop the list. I actually acquired two copies of this card, but number 9/25 is the most aesthetically pleasing by a country mile!
#3. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Authentic Fabrics Dual Patch Gretzky/Howe (20/35)
At number three we have an eye popping patch card featuring two of the greatest players of all time, Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky! While the Kings Gretzky patch is great, a nice 3-colour piece, the Howe patch makes this card incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a Howe patch quite like this for a smaller window, an almost symmetrical vintage Red Wings piece that seems to burst out of the card. While I'm not the biggest fan of SP Game Used patch designs from 05-06, they really nailed it with this card. I struggled with which Gretzky/Howe card to put ahead of the other, but ultimately my love for patches over autographs put this firmly in the number three spot.
#2. 1951-52 Laval Dairy #92 Jacques Plante (SGC 7.5)
I didn't add much vintage hockey in 2022, but I did add this Jacques Plante pre-rookie card from his time with Shawinigan! Quality over quantity I suppose. A truly unique high end example with an SGC grade of 7.5. I'm not 100% sure in how these cards were distributed, but given these were likely local to Laval, or even provincial wide, I can't imagine these are common to find. A truly rare card of one of hockey's greatest goaltenders.
And at #1.....
#1. 2005-06 The Cup Legendary Cuts Jacques Plante LC-JP (1/3)
A signature cut autograph from the Legendary Cuts 05-06 set of Jacques Plante! I don't really know what else to say about this card other than it is among the most prized cards that I own. This copy is numbered to just three cards, making it more rare than even the Harvey or King Clancy cut signatures from the set. A truly special card for any amateur hockey historian, like myself, to own this unique piece of history.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what 2023 will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great weekend and a happy New Year everyone!
