Jets land Niederreiter from Predators for 2nd-round pick

The Winnipeg Jets acquired veteran forward Nino Niederreiter from the Nashville Predators for a 2024 second-round pick, the team announced Saturday.

Niederreiter, 30, has 18 goals and 10 assists in 56 games this campaign. He's under contract through next season at a $4-million cap hit.

The Swiss winger signed a two-year deal with the Predators last summer after four seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. The New York Islanders drafted Niederreiter fifth overall in 2010, but he played only 64 games with the franchise before being moved to the Minnesota Wild.

He's a six-time 20-goal scorer and has posted strong underlying numbers for much of his career.

Canucks acquire former top-10 pick Kravtsov from Rangers

The Vancouver Canucks acquired forward Vitaly Kravtsov from the New York Rangers on Saturday for forward William Lockwood and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

The Rangers drafted Kravtsov ninth overall in 2018. He has six points in 28 NHL games this season.

Kravtsov had a tumultuous tenure in New York. He requested a trade in Nov. 2021 and was subsequently loaned to the KHL. Kravtsov returned to the Rangers this season but struggled to gain minutes. He again requested a trade earlier this month.

The 23-year-old has an $875,000 cap hit and is a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights.

Senators trade Zaitsev, picks to Blackhawks for future considerations

The Ottawa Senators have traded defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, a second-round pick in 2023, and a fourth-round pick in 2026 to the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations, the teams announced Wednesday.

The move is purely a cap dump from Ottawa's perspective, as Zaitsev carries a $4.5-million cap hit through 2023-24 with a base salary of $2.5 million. He signed the contract in 2017 while a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Zaitsev has only appeared in 28 contests this season, notching five assists while averaging over 17 minutes per night. He suited up in 203 games for the Senators across four campaigns.

Ottawa only has three defensemen under contract for next season - Thomas Chabot, Artem Zub, and Jake Sanderson - and has long been rumored to be in the market for a blue-liner with term throughout much of the season. This deal has now given the franchise more financial flexibility to potentially add one.

The Senators aren't expected to be buyers at the March 3 deadline. The club sits six points out of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference despite a 7-2-1 run in its last 10 games.

Chicago, on the other hand, is fully in sell mode leading up to the deadline as the team stares down a significant rebuild. The Blackhawks' biggest trade chip is former MVP Patrick Kane, who controls his own destiny with a full no-movement clause.

The Senators and Blackhawks previously connected on a blockbuster trade in the summer, with Chicago shipping winger Alex DeBrincat to Canada's capital for three draft picks.

Blues trade Barbashev to Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights acquired forward Ivan Barbashev from the St. Louis Blues for prospect Zach Dean on Sunday.

Barbashev has 10 goals and 29 points in 59 games this season. He's a pending unrestricted free agent carrying a $2.25-million cap hit.

Stars acquire Dadonov from Canadiens for Gurianov

The Dallas Stars acquired forward Evgenii Dadonov from the Montreal Canadiens for forward Denis Gurianov on Sunday.

Montreal is retaining 50% of Dadonov's $5-million cap hit in the deal.

The pending unrestricted free agent scored four goals and 18 points in 50 games with the Canadiens.

Devils land star winger Timo Meier from Sharks

New Jersey has acquired the star winger from the San Jose Sharks, The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reports. The full details of the trade aren't yet known.

Widely considered the best player available on the trade market, Meier is a pending restricted free agent with a cap hit of $6 million. However, the Sharks are reportedly retaining 50% of his salary, according to TSN's Chris Johnston.

The Devils don't have an extension in place for their newest acquisition, but Meier will be due a $10-million qualifying offer to retain his negotiation rights, per LeBrun.

The 26-year-old has 31 goals and 52 points in 57 games this season. Meier is only five tallies away from breaking his previous career high of 35 goals, which he set last campaign.

Lightning acquire Jeannot from Predators for Foote, 5 picks

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired hard-nosed winger Tanner Jeannot from the Nashville Predators for defenseman Cal Foote and a package of five draft picks, including a conditional first-rounder in 2025 and a second-rounder in 2024, the team announced Sunday.

Nashville also receives third-, fourth-, and fifth-round selections in 2023. Tampa Bay's first-round pick in 2025 is top-10 protected.

Jeannot carries an $800,000 cap hit and is an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent after this season.

Avalanche reunite with Jack Johnson in trade with Blackhawks

The Avalanche have brought back a familiar face on their back end.

Colorado acquired defenseman Jack Johnson from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for blue-liner Andreas Englund, the team announced Sunday.

Johnson skated in 13 playoff games with the Avalanche last season and averaged 11 minutes per contest during Colorado's Stanley Cup run.

The 36-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent with a $950,000 cap hit. He put up four assists, 96 blocks, and 75 hits in 58 games with the Blackhawks this season while averaging the third-most ice time on the team (19:50).

That is a huge package to give up for Jeannot, even those he is a nice player to have for a playoff run. Even though TB drafts late in the rounds most years, it is still too much in my view.

Part of it is he's an RFA at the end of the year... while he doesn't have a contract, he's tied to TBay now for a few more years. It did still seem like a lot though.

Decent player but this smells like an over reaction to the Boston trade. Who knows though, recently TB always makes a move at the deadline and they have all paid off so far I think.

I hope this McCabe is better than the last one.

My only memory of Brian McCabe was when Chara rag dolled him in a dust up.
I remember him on the bench after ,laughing with teammates as if to say what the hell was I thinking.,lol.

I remember him as a straight defensive liability. The Leafs answer to Dana Murzyn.

Oilers trade forward Jesse Puljujarvi to the Hurricanes

The trade, announced Tuesday, will see the Hurricanes send the Oilers Finnish forward prospect Patrik Puistola in return.

Puljujarvi, 24, has four goals and nine assists in 58 games for Edmonton this season.

"Jesse possesses a great blend of size and skill, and he will add to the depth of our forward group," Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. "He has familiarity with some of our other Finnish players, and we see him as a great fit for our team and locker room."

Picked fourth overall by the Oilers in the 2016 NHL entry draft, the six-foot-four, 201-pound forward has struggled at times, amassing 51 goals and 61 assists in 317 regular-season games.

He spent three seasons in Edmonton before returning to his native Finland to play parts of two seasons in the Finnish Elite League. Puljujarvi returned to the Oilers in October 2020 and signed a one-year contract worth US$3 million in July.

The 22-year-old Puistola has yet to make his NHL debut after being selected by Carolina in the third round of the 2019 draft.

Kane to Rangers for conditional draft picks. Arizona in the mix to retain some of Kane's salary.

Loading up for the stretch run!

They just need some more consistent goaltending and to stop spitting on people. :|
