Hey Guys,

Got this in the mail today.
The only real flaw on the card is the writing on the front, how badly do you think it would affect the grade if I were to send it in? LMK!

Anyone know if the writing will have a big affect on the overall grade?

Absolutely, it will have a huge effect on the final grade.

If BVG, then it will show in the Surface grade, which will lower the Overall grade.

If PSA, then it will probably get a MARK qualifier... or a very low Overall grade without the qualifier.

The card can only grade 1 grade higher then the lowest sub grade. If you had all 9's and one 2 the grade would be a 3. I am fairly sure that is how it works.

That is my understanding as well. I wouldn't get it graded, maybe just send it in to get it slabbed as authentic. It is a beauty of a card condition wise, great pickup.

ugh that's a shame, it's a beauty card but someone had to write on it.
next question: any way to remove the writing without damaging the card?

Not that I know of. The ink sinks into the cardboard staining/dying it so it would be impossible to remove it. Someone could probably do resto on it and retouch it. I would just leave it the way it is and enjoy it:beer:. The writing sort of adds some character to the card.

I'll have to agree. The writing reminds us of the card's age. Slab it as authentic for protection and keep it. Besides, I think that if ever you were to sell it, a true collector would see the overall condition beyond the writing on the card, but maybe not beyond the grade. Therefore, I think if you were to sell it in person or with an extensive description on eBay, you might even fetch a lot more than a BVG 2-3 would get you.

And you could not remove it without damaging the card considerably, since cards back in the day were not laminated or anything. If you were to put water or any liquid on it, the cardboard would absorb it.

I once got melted chocolate off a card I received in a trade (I'm not kidding!), but it was a jersey card from 03-04 which was sufficiently laminated that I could just take a wet Q-tip and wash it off without leaving a trace. I could not imagine trying that on this particular card though.

Pen marks and writing are considered major flaws and will substantially reduce your overall grade with BVG. A mark qualifier with PSA might work out well, it would state the obvious and then give you a fair grade on the rest of the card.

Beauty pickup.
