This is just a fun topic for conjecture...everyone knows that first cards are often the most valuable. RCs, if you will. And I've also noticed that for superstar players since 2005, their RC year autographed cards always command premiums. For example, if you get a Crosby sticker autograph card from a product like Artifacts (Autofacts), it may be worth just a bit over a hundred bucks. But no autograph card of Crosby from the 05-06 season that came out of a UD product is worth that little...they're all worth more.
That's cool, it even makes sense to me. Often times a player's first autos are the prettiest he will sign in his card-signing career.
Nowadays, all of the top rookie players will have multiple signed cards and between SP Authentic and The Cup, hard-signed RCs as well. But BC (Before Crosby :devil
, many/most star players were already vets by the time the card companies got them to sign.
But I always wondered why the collectors as a whole never collected (and thus generated premiums due to extra demand) star players' first autograph cards.
In 91-92, there were four players who had autographed cards for NHL-licensed product. (Not counting Classic.) Brett Hull, Bobby Orr, Kirk McClean and Patrick Roy. These cards, except McClean, are all worth over a hundred bucks despite having populations in the thousands. 92-93 had Don Cherry, Maurice Richard and Jeremy Roenick as first time signers. By the mid 90s, Upper Deck/NHLPA's Be A Player debuted many first time signers including Wayne Gretzky. I know the first Gretzky auto in 94-95 BAP is worth more than the 95-96 BAP.
What do you guys think? The 80s and 90s HOFers, it wouldn't surprise me if some of those guys didn't have autos at all or if the companies of the 00s got them to sign as retired stars in various vintage nostalgia products and those were their firsts. Plus there are plenty of
I think it would be cool to make a list of at least the top 50 players of all time's first autographed cards if they have autographed cards at all, including if they don't have hard-signed autos at all. I guess I'll start and if anyone has anything to contribute, or even has corrections to the list, that would be great. Keep in mind it has to be NHL-licensed product. My Mario Lemieux Classic auto doesn't count.
