was looking at picking up some cards from COMC and was just curious what the difference between the unscratched and scratched versions are ?
Thanks

Unscratched is out the pack.

Scratched is someone exposed the players name on the front.

Hope that helps.

The puck on the front of the card has a grey/ black scratch off stuff on the cards out of the pack as Brian mentioned (just on Topps cards). If it is scratched off (with a fingernail or coin), you can see the players name, but they aren't as highly sought after.

I was not alive and therefore not collecting at this time but was this a popular gimmick at the time? Obviously it did not last long I guess.

thanks for all of the clarification, I'm just thinking about putting a maple leaf collection together and they seem cheap enough just wasn't sure if I should really worry about getting unscratched or not, sounds like it really doesn't matter as I won't be reselling, going to try and start with 1980 maple leafs and move forward

Topps only did the grey scratch stuff the one year. Some of the old Parkhurst sets (50's and 60's) had an area you could rub a coin on the back of the card to reveal the answer to a trivia question or some such... you don't see many unrubbed versions compared to rubbed ones!
