I actually opened these last weekend, basking in the glow of LA's second victory over Vancouver, as were a lot of hockey fans across the continent. :) (FRIDAY, Y U NO SUNDAY???)

Poll question for fun...

It's my general "prejudice" if you will that hockey fans and especially hockey card fans are not vegetarians or vegans.

I vote Pepperoni although I love bacon. (Sorry Canadians, no canadian bacon choice)

Bacon, and good thing we're not playing poker. Please don't take longer than 45 minutes as I have to head out and enjoyed your last show with its sick, sick finish.
 
2x boxes 97-98 Score

I got these for $18 a box...feels a lil bit expensive but whatever. I thought maybe I might get some sort of Mask card as these boxes have a big Cujo mask on the front and a big Pinnacle logo as well...but I found out that's the company logo, not the product logo.

But I was still pleasantly surprised to get some nice cards. No base set though :(

Check It! I always thought Amurol/Score/Pinnacle to be a second rate company who only cared about beating Topps old bubblegum cards. So I never broke much of this company's stuff including this product (which made it more fun for me to break this for the first time). But credit where credit is due, they made some of the best and most memorable subset inserts ever. Check-It, Pinnacle B, Z-Team, Nifty Fifty and of course Masks.

Pinnacle I think actually helped alter the collectors' mindshare (better and worse) to make goalies cooler and thus more collectible. Wish someone would do the same for defensemen although the number of talented defensemen in hockey, nearly all due to the 2003 and 2008 draft classes, are certainly raising the position's profile.

The EPIX card is a rather common card. What you want is Moment and the color to be green (Emerald). So the best EPIX card their matrix is Emerald Moment Wayne Gretzky. Weirdest and most complicated insert set ever. If one day I'm rich, I may go about and build the entire, entire set. I'm sure someone out there did. :P

Pretty nice Hasek Artists Proof. There may be 10 guys in the set of 100 who were top players then and another 5 or so who became memorable later, where if you get their AP, you did good. And then there are like 280+ where if you hit average joe hockey player, you got rocked. So even though it's not numbered, auto'ed or memorabilia'ed, I still like the card!

The foil Roy (zomg foreshadow) is like a Rink Collection base set parallel. Not quite as good as AP.



Fun thing was I was opening these packs at the show, next to a large waste basket and people would walk by, look at the bright yellow wrappers and go WTF has a yellow wrapper? (not Magic, Yu Gi Oh, non-sport or sport...quite baffling to them!)





I might go back to this dealer who had more boxes (so I can make the base set)...he also had a bunch of odd UD 90s boxes as well, some possible Game Jersey hit, some just for the memories. I'll go make him an offer for about 2/3rds what he's asking and take everything. Judging by the amount of dust on these boxes, he ought to do it but probably won't.

Next, some UD base brand, which has now taken over as my favorite brand in hockey.

1st box 09-10 Upper Deck Series 1

I think this product is heavily underrated right now and with just about no redemptions in it, you can buy a case with no worries. So many good YGs in S1 with so many of the players still improving in hobby standing.

Plus it's just loaded with nice stuff anyway. With all of the focus on UD 20th Ann. Retro and UD Canvas boxes, this is one that's just a great break.

$62 a box.

Apologies for the crooked scans...once you sleeve cards, it's tough to get them to sit still or align them right on the scanner glass. Normally when I do a live break, I scan cards unsleeved and it looks better. (Yes I'm too lazy to sleeve and unsleeve...you go unsleeve and sleeve. )

Whoa, I hit a PC card...I better stock up on bottled water and canned goods. That Crosby is a SP and books for $30 lol. Luckily I'm building that set because it looks like the bees knees (like that old Parkhurst International). They do this set every year in UD S1 now. I suggest they only do it once every two or maybe four years, then it will be more special...maybe in sync with the Canada Cup...errr....World Cup of Hockey?

PS - I always, always dig game used jersey swatches from jerseys that were worn/made before everyone was doing game jersey cards. Those jerseys are much rarer I think and Dino was a pretty sick player back in the day. Plus his name is Dino and he plays hockey. We the Kings fans try to make Dean Lombardi into our "Deano."

PPS - Hey Beckett, I don't think Reimer is a $40 Young Gun anymore, speaking of 09-10 UD...

This may be the best series 2 ever. Nah, it IS the best ever, I just decided.

You can get more good RNH's from S2 than you can in S1!!

In to the PC with you, my Voynov! I have like 10 of these regular YGs now...I can't stop breaking UD S2 this year. Still looking for the PoE RNH...if I get that, I'll make the UD Canvas set this year as I already opened the S1 YG RNH and the S2 YG Landeskog. And naturally getting another SP'ed UD Canvas YG is always good. Getting an Exclusives YG is usually good too...but maybe not this one??

Louie and Ryan's photos look like yearbook photos...Kassian's looks like a mugshot...

Oops, I did it again. I got that DWTC in the second pack right as some dude walked up behind me in a Bruins jersey (black)...guess who's name it was on the back? lol.

I got a lot of dirty looks from the other guys at the booth when I opened it. Weird...I've opened 3 of these already from S2...

Can anyone tell me why the Bergeron is worth more than the others?

Also, sick jersey swatch...I wonder how many of the other Dubinsky's out there are 3 color? Looks like lots of 1 and 2 color on eBay with one that's barely 3 color...
