This about sums up what I think; from Twitter:
Adrian Peterson taking issue with how the NFL has chosen to discipline him really makes this whole story come full circle.
The irony of Adrian Peterson upset at how he is being discipline, too bad his 4-year-old son didn't have a union backing him.
It is broken down in the new personal conduct policy that it is a 6 game suspension for the first "offense" with the potential for a higher number if offense involves a minor. So while I think the NFL is a joke by in large with these disciplines, this punishment is not technically out of line.

No issues with the year suspension. In my opinion all sports leagues need to come down harder on all issues like this. It is a privilege to play in these leagues and they should start thinking about that before beating children, their wives, killing other people while driving drunk, etc, etc.
