H.O.F. Collector from e-bay. I won an SPx Ladd Spectrum from him and he shipped in a plain envelope. We all know how bend-sensitive these cards are, and of course it arrived bent (on the letter "R").

Here is what I sent to HOF via e-bay messaging:
Hi:
The Ladd SPx Spectrum arrived today, but we have a problem. I thought I would drop you a line first before contacting e-bay or paypal.
The card has arrived damaged. Why would you send a $;) card in a plain white envelope? You have so much positive feedback yet you ship in common envelope? A bubble pack mailer would have been better. The small center piece of the letter R is bent. I am a high value collector and not so sure I want the card. I can send a scan if you like, but it is definitely bent (unlike the picture in your auction).
How do you want to work this out? Do you want it back with a full refund to me? Do you want to offer me a partial refund (due to the damage) whilst I keep the card? Or would you rather I just file with e-bay and let them sort it out? Let me know please.
Let me know quickly as I will have to contact e-bay or paypal if I don't hear from you soon.

Thank you in advance.

I'll let y'all know how it works out. The bend is not catastrophic, but I paid for a mint card, not a damaged one  Either way, any suggestions on how I could have handled this better are appreciated.

Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn;

That is very unfortunate, especially for how tough those Spectrums can be.

I think you managed to handle it with urgency and respectfulness.. well done! I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction..

Epilogue:

After many e-mails we hammered out a refund deal, then he disappeared :(. I sent him one final e-mail requesting the refund by "such and such" a time, which went by unrepsonded to. So off I went to Paypal (which the aforementioned e-mail warned him of) and filed a conflict report. I mentioned that I took pictures of the packaging plus the damaged card, also that I have the e-mails showing his agreeing to a refund.
In less than 4 hours the refund appeared in my account with an apology.

I'm happy :D Conflict report has been closed. The system worked \:)/

And a somewhat remarkable observation, the seller never asked to see a picture of the damage

Great turnout!

Glad you got some of your money back....

as for the seller not asking for picture... he probably accidently damaged it while he was putting it into toploader and already knew it was dinged up, but perhaps hoped that you wouldnt notice... other than that, i have no idea to why he wouldnt ask for a pic//
