Eli's self-deprecating first post was a massive giveaway.
I also agree with his valuation of the card. While Broda doesn't have much out there (his memorabilia is SCAAAARCE, on or off a card), neither is he a much-sought player. If you look at his memorabilia in releases such as Superlative, his singles tend to be lower-priced. Overall, I think $400 is a fair price for the card - yeah, might have gone a bit higher, maybe as high as $450-500 at straight auction...but that's a big maybe.
I also want to caution against something here, and let me start by saying that this is not an accusation:
A card up for auction belongs to nobody except the seller until the gavel falls at the close of the auction. There is no protection, no right of first refusal, no reasonable expectation that a given collector be allowed freedom from competition with others on this board for a given card. The card is in the wild, and goes to the person who lands it. Let's be careful not to get possessive about things on spec.
