I would like to see how many of you collectors are into

1. Casino Games such as Poker, blackjack
2. Play the lottery such as Powerball or Lotto 6/49
3. Bet on Horses
4. Bet on Sports
5. Always buy scratch tickets..
6. Will gamble at pretty much anything...

There was another thread started about whether or not this is a pointless hobby or not.. and after that awesome reading, I thought that this would be an interesting thread to start.

1. Casino Games such as Poker, blackjack - Poker with the boys once a month
2. Play the lottery such as Powerball or Lotto 6/49 - Sorry, no voluntary tax from me!
3. Bet on Horses - no
4. Bet on Sports - proline - football only
5. Always buy scratch tickets.. - Ummm no
6. Will gamble at pretty much anything... - no, not yet, still some self control ;)

You should've added a none of the above option.

I have terrible luck; which probably explains why I tend to stay away from wax, and all other gambling.

I bet on sports every now and than and will also bet any some very silly stuff too. But only once and a while as I don't have much luck. Although I'm doing goo this year for my football pick. I have the Cardinal's as my team on the board on this site and I also got them in my bowling league and if they inn the Supper bowl I get $500 and I only put in$5. I also made out alright when the wild made there run in the 2002-2003 season from Sin City(I had my brother put 20 bucks on them to make it to the playoffs as I was not old enough yet and I got 400 for that one)

I really enjoy poker and I'll make the friendly sports wager with a co-worker or friend now and again, but all of that is fewer and further between. I have neither the time nor the money to do it as often as I'd like to.

Poker and the Ponies once in a while...

I'll spend $6 on scratch tix this week just because they have an Avs game...

I don't think it is accurate to presume that card collectors are gamblers, solely based on the fact that a lot of people sell or resell their cards. There are many who collect just for the sake of it, and aren't trying to make money on it. I suppose this would be better for me if the topic was if "card dealers" were into gambling, as opposed to "card collectors". And by card dealers, I'm not referencing those who are legit dealers, aka recognised, but also resale dealers.

I, for one, do not collect for value. I could really care less about what my cards are worth, other than for insurance purposes. Being in the hobby for so long has taught me that sports cards are not a true investment, and I am not commited enough to use the market to my own advantage, because it is so volitale. <--- FF says I spelled that word wrong lol.

I'm not sure the thread is asking that...I read it more as: How many sports card collectors also gamble? And does that correlate more to this particular hobby perhaps than other collecting pursuits?

Buying wax in this day and age is a form of Gambling, no ifs ands or buts about it! Anyone who opens a box/case of cards in hopes to get just a player they collect is NUTS. A non-gambler will just buy what they want from the gamblers who open the cases ;)

Back in the day not so much. I remember my dad use to buy us a box of cards once in a while in hopes that we would get a player we liked and to read the backs of the cards. Back then it was like $10 a box

I bet on nothing these days, used to have fantasy teams in all sports and always had NCAA Basketball brackets and blocks for all the big games but not anymore.

I never open packs (unless they're junk and I get them from Target) and only want to deal with people who are selling complete sets. I have no patience for incomplete sets or autographs or patches or parallels. My favorite set of the year is Power Play--all 300 included in a factory set and a jersey card as an extra.

I know, I'm 100% different than pretty much everyone on this board.

Personally I'm not a gambler, been to a couple gambling boats and really never saw the fun in it. It doesn't help that my Dad developed a gambling problem and ended up having to file bankruptcy and lost his house because he got so out of control. I know at the end of the day it's more a personal self control issue but I pretty much stay away from gambling now after what happened to him just in case he passed the crazy gambler gene on to me.

Gambling

I think that busting wax can be considered gambling. In our store we see customers who do have addictive personalities who will open boxes or case and pull only the box hits or case hits and consider the rest to be junk and push it all back to me so they don't have to take it home. Wheather they give it back so they don't have to explain to a loved one what they spend there money on or they just really don't care about the cards. I think this would be considered gambling.

The majority of the hobby is made up of guys who enjoy busting a box and actually spend the time to look at all the base cards and everything else that comes in the pack. These guys will spend the time to admire the photography or the moment in time the photo was taken from. They will take the cards with them and sort them at home while they watch there favorite team play. A few days later they come back to the store and trade there duplicates and any inserts, for players they want or cards missing from the set under construction.

So wheather your in it for the money or in it for the love of the hobby I think it is ultimatley up to each individual person wheather they are gambling or enjoying the most exciting hobby in the world.

Wow, I haven't played poker or blackjack since my honeymoon in 2001; we've bought lottery tickets twice ever on a whim, and that was probably 5 years ago; never bet on horses; the last time I bet on sports was when I bet my dad $10 that the Raiders would beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl, and I can't tell you how long ago that was; no scratch tickets.

Man, I'm pretty boring!
