This really does not effect me any. Mostly because I do not build these sets any longer.
But I was about to help a fellow collector with his base card needs for his 2024-25
Upper Deck series 1.He needed 16 cards in total. So I had opened 4 hobby boxes, and two
mega boxes. I could not complete his want list.I found that amazing since I see people
selling the base sets for $5.00 or in some cases even less. I know to most base cards get
tossed directly into the trash. But this question is not about who cares about base. But
rather just how hard it is to build a base set if you so desired. So since I could not fill this
collectors want list. I now know I could not build a base set out of 4 hobby boxes and
two mega boxes. Seem unacceptable on Upper Decks part to me.

Winston,
What I have found is that it takes 3 boxes from the same case to really build a single base set. Now, if you buy a case and put together the base from that, yeah you will end up with a bunch of sets. So the question is did you buy from the same case and close in to the other boxes, if not you may have bought "the same box". The other part is if you are buying retail you are even screwed worse than this. I opened a case of jumbo packs once for 2021-22 and did not a complete set out of that, I do remember pulling like 10 of one guy though.

So in the end, it is a MAJOR crap shoot unless you buy the cases and put them together then. Just my experience for the regular Upper Deck sets at least.

I did buy the 4 hobby boxes from the same case.No idea about the mega boxes since they came from Walmart.
It use to be a base set in every box now it is a base set per case.Maybe people will recognize this and
finally some vale(not a lot) can be placed on the commons. Thanks, Winston.

Lol, sometimes 3-4 boxes would work. It took me 6.5 boxes once to complete a base set…no YG complete set, just the base. I believe it was the 12-13 Series 1 set. Luca Sbisa was my missing card. I think to this day, I only have 3 complete sets based on only the Sbisa.

For context, I bought 6 boxes and ended up getting a part box, where I pulled the first Sbisa. The crazy thing was, I kept getting the same YG cards, and I wasn’t lucky enough to pull someone big multiple times…Jaden Schwartz, had/have 5 YG of his. I did hit YG Canvas every other box (were 1:4 boxes), and I hit a patch & a /100 acetate inserts. I believe I hit 2 Exclusives and 1 HG, so it really wasn’t a bust. It was crazy though to just be missing a $.10 card for so long. The real kicker is that I bought all of my boxes from one dealer, so that was weird “randomness.”

With the new format of 12 packs per box there is less base per box but I did open a case of 24/25 series 1 and was able to put together 7 base sets so they are still fairly easy to come by since there are a lot of case breakers. Not sure if the value is there for complete sets but I had success selling team sets on ebay for 2$ each, much easier than selling the complete base sets. I must have sold close to 100 team sets by now and all the popular teams sold out fairly quickly.

I have never done that but sounds like a good way to recover some of the money this stuff cost these days.

7 base sets seems to the number per case where under the previous format you would get 10 sets per case. Hope this is helpful.

I was able to complete a base set out of 3 hobby boxes for 24-25 Series I & all the 23-24 flagship sets.
