I love hockey and love all the different types of players the league has but when it comes down to collecting I only have cards of Felix Potvin. I still look at all the different cards of other players and am sometimes tempted to buy a few here and there but always back off...knowing I could just buy more cards of Potvin.

Anyone else feel the same way? I really want to build a collection outside my player collection.

i feel ya, i am a pure cloutier collector, i found myself asking myself the same question as you, i felt i needed more with the hobby, as i dedicated 100% to cloutier, latly ive been picking up a TON of canucks cards and im enjoying it.

i have never collected a set before and i feel that is next for me. i want to give it a try.

but i know how you feel, i am starting to branch out but its like breaking out of a comfort zone haha.

I'm the same way. I devote all my funds stricky to PC pick ups because A.) It's easier on my wallet, and B.) There is just soo much stuff out there. I start an autograph set, or new player PC, I will start branching off of my new chase and before you know it I will drop a few grand. I like to stick to chasing only a few things, makes my PC more affordable.

I'm a lot more stubborn than I was in my salad days. Before sharply focusing on Selanne I'd pick up inserts and jerseys that I thought looked cool or that I wanted as a kid but never picked up (UD's '93-94 Silver Skates is a perfect example of this).

Now, I'm not as easily tempted by those sorts since Selanne has covered off most of the boom era forward.I still pick up the odd here-and-there like the Team Pinnacle cards, but other thn those if I can't get it in Teemu I don't want it.

I got bored with my Alfie PC and sold off most of my stuff. I am starting to think that set collecting is more fun. The satisfaction when finishing a set is way better than knowing you'll never have 100% completion on a player PC IMO

I was pretty militant about my Wendel Clark collection but find that I am looking for another PC to start..

I started off as strictly a Ray Bourque collector, then moved onto HOF Bruins players, now am transitioning towards a set collector, but still pick up HOF Bruins cards when i can.

I wish I could be strict with my collecting, I keep adding all these new PC ideas here and there, and have had to scale it back. It wasn't much of a scale-back, but I'm trying.

Well I was doing a Lucic PC, but there were two collectors with alot of the 1/1's Shields ECT. So I gave up and started doing Terry O'reilly. Well as luck has it those Lucic collectors sold their PC's, I got up to about 80%+ of all Terry O'reilly cards. Realized I spent about 8 HRS a day trolling for more PC Cards that just werent there. Then just quit and sold both off. I still buy boxes because I love hockey and cards, but it just costs too much and I'm too much of a neurotic completist to be missing cards from a PC. That Being said, I AM saving funds to get all the Bruins Day With the cup (when the prices die down) and SPGU Championship marks.

Similar boat as everyone here. I am a die-hard Irbe collector hit hard by the recent influx of other Irbe collectors who seem to have no life-expenses outside Irbe cards. I get what I can to keep my collection in the world-class, but work on many other projects to offset that depressing trend of losing out on 1/1s that I 10000% refuse to pay $500+ on.

For example, my other player PC is of a real nobody who holds sentimental value to me due of his nationality: Levente Szuper. His stuff is hard to find, but can be found cheap when located. I am almost as proud of my Szuper collection as I am of my Irbe collection.

I also work on the Carolina Hurricanes all-time roster, where I try to get one GU and one AU card of every player who ever played for the team.

Additionally, since I finished the 2000-01 Black Diamond Game Gear set a few years back, I finally am building a new GU set called: 2003-04 SPGU Game Gear. Just as fun, just as difficult, but also something else to do when my other stuff are slower.

People tend to lose motivation in player collecting as many people want to be 100%. There are only a handful of people who can ever go 100%. I am fortunate enough to nail the majority of my PC player.

However, at times you always think back at whether it was worth it to spend that much.

I keep a side PC where I collect the SPA FWA of certain players. It is quite satisfying enough imo. Eventually I might attempt to do a Cup RC of the same thing.

I wouldnt call it a recent influx. Many of us have been here for yearsssssss even before you knew who Arturs Irbe is. I actually starting following him & collecting various memorbilia in the late 80's after falling in love with soviet hockey in the post tretiak era and watching tapes of games my uncle used to get for me. The late 80s were great when he got to play against NHL teams in the super series. Those are great memories of games. When the sharks came into the league I started following them religiously, Irbe being claimed from minnasota was like an added bonus. Then in 93-94 when SJ added Makarov & Larionov it was like a dream come true. That 93-94 sharks season will forever go down in history as the best cinderella season ever in hockey.

Collecting was a lot different back then, and in the 90's the AOL sports cards forums & telenet message boards were the way I went, as the internet & ebay didnt even exsist. Its not that a bunch of new people just started collecting, its that a bunch of collectors, like myself have just discovered these trading forums & its like a gold mine making up for lost time.

PS, since im the guy that paid $500+ (actually only $256 outa my pocket) for the card & was brought up on this post, I belive your bid was in the $550 range, so I wouldnt go as far as saying you 1000000% refuse to pay over $500 haha ;) ;)

Happy collecting tho, yes it gets frustrating when someone has the means to pay more $$$ then someone else, but thats part of the "sport" of collecting. And rejoice, since your about to add another 1/1 to your collection, cause I have no desire for the Topps Gold Label 1/1 thats bout to end, so you dont have to worry bout losing out on it. :) :)

BTW TS, do you happen to have that Potvin ITG "felix the cat" pad card?? Thats one of my favorite cards of anyone that Ive seen!

I am stubborn to no end.If we want to narrow it down to card collecting my stubbornness has yielded to my desire to add a few more "side PCs" as lately I have decided to collect all Shanahan and Joseph cards that picture them as a Blue as well as picking up cards of the Blues new "kids".That being said I will only routinely overpay for Sakic and Paul Stastny cards I need:|

Bingo!

Ive had more fun piecing together some higher end sets than I probably ever did collecting Vinny. VInny became a choir. Everytime a set was released I gasped. Some sets I would just shake my head but felt I needed to keep up.

Now? I pick a couple high end, goldish, great looking sets and go for gusto. It's fun, rewarding, very cool because I get cards from lots of different players not just one, and like you said, far more satisfaction when completing it.
