Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of August through to December 2020. This year was extremely busy for me work wise and I fell far behind in my show-and-tells, but here is the wrap up. I initially was going to try and fit my top 10 pick ups of 2020 but I think it would be best to have a separate thread for that, so stay tuned for that!
As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 15 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. So without further adieu, lets get to it!
Team Canada Authentic Goalie Cut Jersey (Home White) Size 56G
So starting off the show is not a card but a jersey! For those unaware, I play goal and it has naturally led me to be an amateur collector of authentic goalie cut jerseys, particularly Team Canada or mid-2000's era styles. This particular jersey has always been on my bucket list because this version was first featured in Canada's 2002 Olympic quest to end the 52 year gold medal drought. It was actual my first introduction to hockey as a young boy, I can remember obtaining two of the four DVD's released by General Mills cereal back in 2002 and ever since then Bob Cole's commentary on Joe Sakic's 5-2 goal in the gold medal game has been etched in my memory.
Team Canada Authentic Goalie Cut Jersey (Alternate Red) Size 56G
The second item is also a jersey, and again from the 2002 Olympic campaign. If you thought the first jersey was a tough find as an authentic goalie cut, this one is multiple times as rare. This alternate red jersey was only featured by Canada's men in one game.. the humiliating 5-2 opening game loss to Sweden. Also the only game featuring Cujo in goal before Brodeur took over as Canada's number one option. Given the history of this sweater, its not a surprise these weren't a big seller, therefore less of them around today. Really happy to add this one.
2005-06 Victory Golds /100
I was fortunate to find a large lot of 2005-06 Victory gold, 50 to be exact! For the sake of post length, I will only show my favourite of the bunch: Marc Andre-Fleury! These additions give me a total of 71/300 or 24% of the set. If you wish to check out the rest, they can be viewed in my flickr album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/153486645@N06/sets/72157697028759950/
2005-06 Victory Silvers /250
I was also able to find a large lot of Victory Silver cards from the same seller. Even though these parallels are more numerous than their gold counterparts, these are much tougher to find. I believe the reason is that they look very similar to the regular base cards, and the silver edges can be easily missed. With the addition of 47 silvers, I now have 59/200 or 30% completion. I will only show the best of the bunch: Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr and Mark Messier. If anyone has seen the Gretzky black and can help me complete my rainbow, please let me know!!!
The rest of the cards can be viewed here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/153486645@N06/sets/72157699656694352/
2005-06 Black Diamond Jersey Jagr #J-JJ (3-colour)
Speaking of Jagr, the next item is a rare 3-colour jersey card from his days as a NY Ranger.
2005-06 UD Canadian Fall Expo Thornton Checklist #199 (6/10)
This next card completes both my checklist and Thornton cards featured in this parallel set. You don't come across these too often anymore, so this is a welcome add.
2005-06 UD Rookie Inspirations Dual Patch Gorges/Hamhuis #249 (13/25) (3-colour)
Not sure if there are many Gorges or Hamhuis collectors out there anymore to appreciate this card, but a dual 3-colour patch for both Defencemen is a plus for me.
2005-06 UD Inspirations Jersey Naslund/Zetterberg #D-NZ (2-colour)
I'm always happy to buy cards from this series when they feature 2 or even 3 colours in the swatch window. Having two iconic Swedes depicted is just a bonus!
2005-06 UD PowerPlay Box x3
I won this trio of boxes a few months back and they remain sealed to this day. Given that I literally have a zero percent chance of any rookie cards (all redemption cards), I have been tempted recently to open one in the hopes of finding a low numbered Impact Rainbow Parallel or a Specialty Patches /5.
2005-06 UD Series 2 Jersey Phillipe Sauve J2-SA (3-colour)
Its not everyday that I find mutlicoloured versions of the 05-06 series of jerseys cards missing in my collection. This particular one is actually an upgrade for me, so to all the Sauve collectors out there, I have one available!
Alright, now to some of the better highlights!
2005-06 UD The Cup Honorable Numbers Mark Parrish HN-MP (5/37)
Not exactly the first name that comes to mind when you think 05-06 The Cup, but a truly stunning dual 3-colour patch and sharp autograph constitutes as high end to me!
2005-06 UD SPxcitment Superstars Autograph Parallel Parrish #XS-MP (4/5)
With only five copies of each autographed parallel to go around, finding any of these cards can be a tall order. I'm quite happy with the quality of the auto as well, given these tended to fade easily.
2005-06 UD SP Game Used Rookie Exclusives Parallel Wozniewski RC RE-AW (5/5)
To some a long forgotten name, the "Woz" went on to carve out a nice career for himself, spanning 1.5 decades and ultimately hanging them up in Germany with Munich EHC in 2014-15.
The Montoya Collection
I was fortunately enough to acquire an extensive Montoya from a fellow Forum collector, featuring a large assortment of cards from his rookie year, which is right up my alley!
Here are the highlights of the Montoya rookie cards, no particular order, until the last 7.

Now the Top 7 Montoyas of the collection!
#7. 2005-06 Ultimate Rookies RPA #124 (17/25)
I really like this design and I actually don't have many of these in my collection. I believe they did a throw-back to this design in 2015-16, and I can't say I blame them.
#6. 2005-06 The Cup Rookie Gold Parallel (3/29)
An iconic card design, and personally, I prefer the gold versions aesthetically to the regular silver design. Would love to upgrade this to a 3-colour patch if one ever crosses my path.
#5. 2005-06 UD Ice Premiere Patch Autograph (4/10)
The design works really well with the NY Rangers blue and it was quite revolutionary for the time to feature memorabilia in an acetate card. Only thing to make this better would be to have used an action photo rather than a rookie shoot one.
#4. 2005-06 Ultimate Pairings Monotya/Lundqvist (8/25)
Really liked this design, and I'm very happy that his goaltending partner and featured pairing is future HOFer Henrik Lundqvist!
#3. Fleer Hot Prospects White Parallel RPA #253 (2/5)
Yet another white parallel for the collection, I only really seem to find these only when I buy player PCs. With these cards being limited to only 5 copies, its not everyday these become available.
#2. UD Ultimate Debut Threads Patch Autograph (9/10)
One of my favourite sets produced in the 05-06 hockey hobby year, I'm very happy to add this to my growing set. The patch is also easily identifiable, which is a bonus, to the "S" on the Rangers shoulder patch.
#1. UD SP Authentic Rarefied Rookies (1/1)
All I could say was "wow" when it arrived. The second card from this set that I added this year, this was by far the cream of the crop from the Montoya collection.
2005-06 UD Game Patches /15
The three patches for this set were a long time coming. It took years for me find a Neely patch, and earlier this year I actually bought a 2-colour version. This 3-colour patch sort of caught me by surprise so I happily bought it. The Luongo was a regret of mine from 3 years ago. Well, I suppose regret isn't the right word and more so I was a financially limited University student when a plethora of these patches were all auctioned at once. I may have one one or two, but this Luongo was the card I really wanted at the time just given the unique patch. Fast forward 3 years and it surfaces again as an ebay listing. Well I wasn't going to let it slip away a second time so after quick negotiation it was on its way to me. And last but not least, the Simon has a really great eye catching blue from the Caps Eagle, and pops nicely with the Flames background.
2005-06 In The Game Ultimate Memorabilia
I have really taken a deep dive into this product. I love the quality of vintage pieces, many of which are one of a kind pieces. My thinking is, one day we will run out of Joliat, Sawchuk, Beliveau jerseys that aren't in jersey collections or in the Hall of Fame for that matter. So acquiring these cards really but a unique connection for modern hockey collectors to the past greats, even without buying vintage.
A brief summary of the lot, I picked up the Joliat given my weakness for multicolored jerseys. The Ovechkin Game Used number I purchased at an extremely good price given what his rookie stuff sells for these days. The three Plante editions are all one of one and feature some stunning jersey, stick and glove pieces. The dual Ovechkin/Malkin memorabilia and autographed also came with the previous Ovie and it is in fact my first Malkin autograph. Lastly one of the few times I ventured outside of my collecting year, I added this Vault Terry Sawchuk patch. The opportunity presented itself and I just couldn't pass it up!
This piece needed a little separation from the group, as this card is made by the Emblem patch. This Lemieux patch comes from the Stanley Cup Finals patch in either his 1991 or 1992 Stanley Cup wins. Numbered to 10, this complete jersey Lemieux is truly a one of a kind addition to my collection.
2005-06 UD High Glossy /10
Three new acquisitions highlight the set progress of my HG set. The addition of Mayers brings back memories of him as a Maple Leaf in some of the darkest times of being a Leafs fan. There were times where all you had to look forward to were the hits and fights on those basement dwelling teams haha. The Richardson HG YG was one of only a handful of Young Guns that were still missing from my set. Tough rookie find and one of the few active players still in the NHL, currently with the Nashville Predators for the 2021 Season. And last but not least Pavel Datsyuk. The Magic man needs no introduction, with the craftiest hands in the history of the league, he is also still active and lighting up the KHL with Yekaterinberg.
These 3 addition give me 221/487 or 45% completion.
2005-06 UD Victory Black /5
With three new additions over the span of 5 months, this set continues to chug along. One interesting story that the seller of the Van Ryn shared with me, is that he used to own two of the five copies produced. Story short, he ended up gifting Mike's mom a copy and now I own the other. The LeClair purchase was a quick ebay BIN, and it was the same copy that I found on worthpoint and sold wayyy back when the product first release. The Ward Rookie was a bucket list card I had been searching for ever since I started this project. Recently I have been down the Youtube rabbit hole and reliving his performance in the 2006 playoffs. For those who never watched him then, its easy to forget how good he was at key moments of that Carolina run. Had he been traded to a contending team while still in his prime, he might have been remembered as one of the great goaltenders of his era along with Fleury. Lundqvist, Crawford etc.
These three cards bring me to a total 66/300 or 22 set completion.
