Just doing my daily Ovechkin searches and came across this:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2005-Upper-...tem2172edf3dc:g:r~kAAOSwSkFfFjMq&LH_Auction=1

Is this not asking for people to purchase the card, take it out of the case and just sell it as a raw copy?

Is this a regular designation that PSA uses, I don't buy a ton of graded cards so I've noticed this on a lable before?

Thoughts/opinions on this type of card.

I think you're exactly right. It was likely trimmed to take out a flaw on one edge or a corner, or something.... but still the real card.

So someone buys it for $300, cracks the slab, and sells it for $700.

I totally agree it is an invitation for shenanigans. And given it got 43 bids... I can't see any purpose for bidding higher than 0 other than to try and misrepresent it in the future.

That said, PSA is in the business of slabbing cards.
PWCC is in the business of selling cards.

The card in question was paid for to be processed and slabbed despite being altered. PSA fulfilled their business obligations
The card in question was properly presented on the PWCC site and the buyer knows what they are getting (albeit, the point about what the alteration is would be helpful).
To be clear, I'd say neither company has done anything wrong within their business model.

If someone buys it and takes it out of the slab to misrepresent it in the future, that's all on them. It's also incumbent though on the purchaser to do their due diligence.

All of that said - this is a good Public Service Announcement that should strike caution into the heart of everyone who is buying high end, unserial numbered cards on how easy it could be to get defrauded.

I don't find it at all surprising given how much money is flying around in the card collecting hobby these days.

It's a steal at $300. Plenty of room for someone with questionable ethics to successfully re-submitted the card to the various grading services until it gets accepted without the altered designation.
