YES!

I'm beyond stoked about this movie...people are slamming the recasting of Bruce Banner, but the truth is, I doubt the Bruce Banner character will have as big a role in the movie as a CGI Hulk will...

a bit puzzled by jeremy renner as hawkeye but whatever. i think i am more weirded out by chris evans portraying both johnny storm and steve rogers than the recasting of the hulk though norton is one hell of an actor - but yeah you're right; cgi hulk will probably have more screen time.

I wonder how standalone films of Captain America and Thor will be when all is said and done. Sure, Cap is a historical superhero in comics, but will he resonate today? And can Thor get away from a gut feeling I have that it will be too campy?

With big ensemble casts like the Avengers one will be it is easier to spread things out some (to an extent--too many people and you lose focus anyway). With individual films, though, you have to actually work on things like character development.

Of course, they did well with Spidey and Iron Man.

A few things here:

1. I LOVE Renner's casting. He single-handedly elevates Hawkeye to the main table. In the hands of a lesser actor, he'd be the worst kind of also-ran.

2. I HATE Ruffalo's casting. With apologies to Ruffalo, who is a fine actor and should handle the role well, Marvel just screwed the pooch on this one, plain and simple. Norton was willing to return to the role at a fraction of his normal pay rate, he'd already met with Joss to discuss JOSS'S ideas for Avengers (not his own) and he made it very well known that he was ready to work FOR Joss, not WITH him, and Norton's track record speaks well of his ability to work under a director he respects (Fight Club, anyone?). All of this invalidates Marvel's assertion that Norton would have brought trouble to the set. Aside from the Punisher, Marvel has fumbled the handling of Hulk worse than any character in their lexicon, a trend they've sadly chosen to continue here.

3. While I have my concerns about how well the Thor and Captain America characters will translate to the big screen, Marvel Films has shown dedication to an overall vision involving the Avengers characters in the Iron Man and Incredible Hulk films. They've handled certain potentially campy elements in all three films with a great deal of sincerity. Hopefully they'll present the Thor and Cap stories with the same sincerity and avoid too many cheesy/campy facets, allowing Joss and company to fold the stories into one cohesive (and potentially brilliant) Avengers film.

4. The assembled Avengers will bring to the screen a level of ensemble talent the likes of which hasn't been seen outside of an Ocean's movie, and NEVER in a comic book film. It's an exciting time and one thing's for sure: We're gonna see something memorable in 2012. It could be the absolute pinnacle of superhero films. Or it could be the most glorious trainwreck ever committed to celluloid. One way or another, we're gonna remember it...

5. Speaking of the Punisher, during this panel, Marvel Films's rep confirmed that they've reaquired the character and will be making the next Punisher film in-house. Hopefully we're in for a magnificent (and faithful) relaunch in the very near future!

4th time's the charm!

I wish they'd give up on the Punisher movies. Just get it through their heads, that it doesn't translate to the big screen. There's nothing awe inspiring or great about a normal guy that's out for revenge and shoots a bunch of criminals. It's only been done about 1000 times by guys not named Frank Castle. Stick with what works...the super hero movies. The stuff that people like to see on the screen that's new for a lot of people.

Avengers should be good...but I have concerns when they try to jam pack a bunch of heroes or villains into one movie. Especially when they cram it all in about a 2 hour flick.

I think Thomas Jane did OK as the Punisher, but I'd prefer to see him in a secondary role, perhaps in a Wolverine or Spidey flick, much like he started out in the comics scene.

I absolutely LOVE Edward Norton's acting ability, but let's face it, he'd be wayyyyy underutilized in an Avengers flick. The reason the franchises like Spiderman, Iron Man and Xmen/Wolverine have all done so well at the box office is because they've allowed for a certain level of campiness that is in tune with the franchise themselves, coupled with career defining performances from Tobey, Hugh and Robert. Meanwhile, both Hulk movies have been sorely lacking in the exact same quality. Ed Norton is too well known as a tour de force dramatic actor. His previous roles from films like Fight Club, Primal Fear and American History X overshadow his role of Bruce Banner. It's too difficult to separate his previous roles from this one....

I'm excited as well, but is anyone else concerned about the testosterone laden cast? Couldn't they have found a spot for at least one superheroine in more than a bit role? All we've got is MAYBE a bit role for the Black Widow. And am I correct in assuming they've dropped Hank Pym/ Ant Man altogether from the ensemble?

Ah well, let's get through Thor and Captain America first, then we'll see how this is really shaping up...

I would think that if Eva Longoria is going to be in your movie, you use THAT to help sell it... maybe once the hype needs a boost they'll bring in the female stars...

I think Thomas Jane did OK as the Punisher

I thought that movie was awesome. I'm not a comic collector, so never read the original comics - I think they softened the role considerably given Frank Castle is a mean SOB in the comics as I understand it. But I thought Jane's version was serious and his portrayal very likeable at the same time.

I haven't seen the newer Punisher movie, but I heard it was awful.

I won't line up to see Avengers, but it'll be one of the top of the list for rentals when it comes out.
