Needed a place to vent.

The shop was just hit hard by some scammers who used stolen credit cards to purchase high end boxes. Charge backs galore! Over 10k of product...

Talked to another shop owner and they said the same guys hit 4-5 different local card shops. There's a special place in hell for these guys.

Hopefully I can sort this all out. But it doesn't look good...

Do you have a video feed of the scammers? May help with the po po..

Do you guys ask for ID on purchases over a certain $$$?

Would any sort of insurance cover you guys for the loss? I really hope it works out for you!

Did they use the chip with PIN number for the purchase? Always peculiar when the chip "doesn't work"

Even with stolen cards - if they had their own card making machines, they could just make a new card with the account info and use their own PINs I believe

That is what I am wondering. I thought the banks had to eat this kind of fraud as the vendor followed all the rules. Why should the vendor get charged back in this case? The bank approved the purchase and is insured for the loss???

Does this mean that merchants MUST ensure that only the chip cards are used? I guess so. Did these purchases get made with chip cards?

I don't understand why this always falls back on the retailer. If there is a flaw in the credit card system that allows this kind of fraud, then it should be the credit card companies that are liable. All the retailer should have to worry about is processing a transaction.

Man that's terrible news, most of what I'd want to say would probably be bleeped out by the profanity filter, so let's just say Derek you're one of the good guys in the hobby and I really hope things work out!

Last time I was in the USA a few months ago, basically no one accepted chips... it was all swipe and signature so that can't be the case.

Seems silly for vendor to get charged back, CC should be insured against fraud no?

As the banks control your money and the vendors money, who can stop them from treating the vendors like the ones who did something wrong? nobody. that is why they do it. I had a case where the bank mishandled one on my business deposits and the very first thing they did was take the money out of my business account and put it back in their own pockets. They didn't even try to contact me and this was about a $10K deposit. It wasn't until I started asking about it that I found out the teller had not stamped the back of the cheque and the US bank bounced it. Not any of my fault but the first thing they did was take the money out of my account. Shameful.

This really sucks and I truly feel sorry for you.

In reality this is almost the perfect scam. Especially if someone did this with cash at the Expo. Buy a box or two here, a box or two there, maybe a case here. Vendors will not be able to remember the look of a person who bought a box or two from them after the three day weekend is over. Just rip open the boxes or cases and the police can not track specific hits to being from stolen product. Sell the singles and make your profit. Just make sure that you get rid of the empty boxes and pack wrappers. Perfect crime other than needing to steal cash to do it.

Hopefully no scammer reads this and I give them ideas.
