I'm a few months (4) behind my comics stash so I don't like to look at previews and upcoming releases because I don't want to give it away and spoil the comics I haven't read....

but I've heard "things"... and is this Batman R.I.P what I think it is? :whatthehell:

Please no exact spoilers but a general idea would be nice ;)

Don't worry...if he dies, they'll bring him back in 3 months with 20 different cover variations just like Superman.

Besides I'm sure someone will dump him in a Lazarus Pit if he does die...hehe. Poor guy...he's been beaten up all these years, had his back broken and lost a few buddies. He needs a little rest.

I will probably just by my regular issues and then pick up the HC when it gets released.

Back a few years ago I picked up every single cross over issue for the No mans Land series, what a sick money grab. Sure I enjoyed the story put I end up spending several hundred dollars more then I needed to.

It's asinine.

If there's anything that Waid, Bendis, Ross and Ennis' work should have imprinted on the industry, it's that good work generates readership - not gimmicks. The Flash and Cap America both went from struggling titles to flourishing flagships again under Waid's pen. Ennis has taken some of the darkest and strangest topics and turned them into hits. Ross' artistry alone is worth the price for whatever he's working on - never mind when he comes up with a dynamite idea like Kingdom Come.

So why are we back to killing ol' Bats?

They did the exact same thing with the Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul. It was an 8 parter and every week it was featured in one of the bat books (i.e. Batman, Nightwing, Robin, etc).

I hate it but I understand why they do it. It's a good way to:

a) Increase sales of all titles
b) Perhaps generate a new readership for said title
c) Get the storyline out much faster (every week instead of every month).

If they really did want to make a 20 issue Batman R.I.P imagine that coming out once a month for almost 2 years? It would be overkill and destroy any of the buzz the series generates.

Maybe the answer is what Amazing Spider-man is currently doing. Have the title released 3 times monthly instead of having the story crossover in 3-4-5 other books.

Sales spike, but don't stay spiked. Captain America title sales were back to normal within 4 months. Superman took a little longer - about 14 months. Batman sales started plummeting immediately after Knightfall, because nobody could stand Azrael as Batman.

Hell, the grandaddy crossover event of them all - the Mutant Massacre - got sales up maybe 20%, and within a year business was right back to miserable.
