First off, why are you bumping threads from almost 2 years ago.
Not saying these items are not a valid discussion, but when the topic has "died" from almost 2 years ago, I would usually start a new topic.
Most annoying is when people bump sale threads from years ago.
I understand you are new and it appears you are looking to add post counts to your resume instead of creating your own thread because of that reason of being new, but please look at the dates.
And I agree, I used the wrong terminology. Player's weren't smaller. But definitely in today's game, they are better built, physically. More in shape as an average between all players in the league.
The "stars" of today are not bigger than the 90's lemieux, jagr, sundin, lindros, etc.
They are actually smaller...crosby, St Louis , stamkos, malkin.
Jagr is 40 + and top 20 in scoring on the puck dead devils.
Shows how pathetic the nhl is right now.
I'm a 90s kid. I remember all those guys growing up. They are the only reason why I watched the game, and played the game growing up.
I know I'm comparing apples to oranges.
That is why I said "Athletes get better over time, so does the game. They are only good during their own generation."
In general, I strongly believe today's athletes as a whole are better built than any from the past.
I can see any player now being placed in the past and doing better or significantly better than they currently are, simply because the game has grown a lot more and competition to succeed is so much more demanding.
Doing the opposite and putting the 90s athletes in todays game. They are not going to be doing nearly as well as the past.
With a few exceptions.
Therefore:
"Athletes get better over time, so does the game. They are only good during their own generation."
Sorry but I have to ask how old you are? You should watch the older hockey games on ESPN classic. The games were brutal rough and you could get away with murder esp in playoffs and playoff OT. Players could actually hit, hold, spear, hook, slash and get away with pretty much everything. Players today are soft!!! Back than players would give and do anything for their team to win. See Bobby Clark vs Russia in 72.
You are comparing apples to oranges. If the players from those days had the equipment and training todays players have plus the heart and desire they had back than they would dominate today. Take Ovy and put him back in those old skates and lack of training and he would be no different than guys from that era. Great players are great players no matter when. However todays soft players wouldn't survive the old rough game if they had the New NHL attitude of ME first before the team.
