I'm not sure if a post on this subject has been made alerting everyone to the roller marks up the middle of many of the UD Young Guns in Series 1.

I found out today after I had purchased an 09-10 UD Tavares Young Gun RC.

It was mentioned from several individuals at the Expo that about 60% of the UD YG cards have two roller marks from the top to the bottom. You must have the card out of a soft sleeve and top loader and rock it back and forth in the light to see the damage.

I was fortunate enough to buy off a seller at the show that had 4 Tavares YGs and would exchange the card. I went through all 4, and 3 of the 4 Tavares RC's had roller damage.

I don't know the extent of the damaged cards or all the players that may be effected. I do know the card I initially purchased had damage and 3 of the 4 Tavares cards I examined, were damaged.

UD is aware or has been shown the cards and is suppose to fly in undamaged Young Gun cards to replace the ones ripped at the show or if you just happen to have a damaged card. I'm not sure exactly when? How many? What cards? etc.. this is just what someone at the UD booth stated today.

So BEWARE if you buy any 09-10 UD Young Guns off ebay or elswhere. You may be getting a damaged card with very little value because of the roller marks. It is basically unoticable from any frontall view, such as a picture.

If your not going to the Expo this weekend, check your cards for damage and if there is, call or email UD for your replacement(s) ASAP.

I hope this helps members that were going to purchase UD YGs and members that already have.

Oh Oh , heard this on another board, was waiting to buy my Tavares YG on ebay, but think I will wait until this issue is cleared up more by sellers.

Thanks for the heads up, another reason I love ITG, minimal damages to report already cased.

i heard it was 1 in 3 cases. not for sure thou.

Upper deck was replacing all damaged young guns at the expo.

They had a huge stack of tavares rc's :)

UD went the extra mile for people at the Expo with Karvin walking table to table asking who needed YGs replaced. Hopefully those who weren't in attendance will have the same CS response.

UD went several extra miles for the YG issue:
On Thursday when the issue first came to light, they had an urgent high-level meeting. By Friday, sleeves of fresh, unblemished YG replacements were being packaged up from the printers to be sent to Expo and overseen by no less a person than UD's CFO (according Karvin). They were overnighted, expedited through customs and actively being put into use by Saturday afternoon.

That's Extra Mile, folks. I'm very willing to call'em on the carpet when they screw up, but it would be dishonest of me not to give them proper recognition and thanks for when they really do it right - this was fixing it right.

Of course I can only comment from a distance, but I can't help but think back to a saying that went something like
"If you don't learn from the past, you are destined to fail over and over again"

I'm not making this post with the goal of raising ire towards UD again, especially since they have been taking quite a beating on this site, but am I the only person that remembers the Ovechkin Black Diamond rookie debacle? The AO quad came out with such high hopes, so many people seeking it, and the the card holding such great value. Then UD decided to hand them out like candy at Hallowe'en. Sure at a glance it seemed like UD was really trying to reach out, but what really happened was that they ticked off a lot of collectors by letting everyone know that UD had piles of the cards around. The AO quad rc value plummeted. I know it did, I had one.

Now apparently they show up with sleeves of Tavares YG's? What does that say about either the insertion/distribution or re-running of certain cards. Are the SP's no longer SP's, to be valued as highly as a Paul Kariya rookie, or Jaromir Jagr rookie? Sure they are great players, but those rc's are almost worthless (in a comparative way to "SP's").

I'm sorry but I don't subscribe to this being a good gesture by UD. I think they simply didn't learn from the AO mix up. I really wish UD could step up and actually do something right, but they continue to shoot themselves in the foot. It's not all about Karvin, but he is the link most of us have to UD, so I say come on Karvin...raise the bar on the company you work for, fight the apparent complacency, make people accountable.

At least I now know of one Tavares rc that will never make it into my collection. Please don't mess up any more of them.

Regretfully,
Glenn

Rather than having to reprint or redistribute how's about some quality control in the first place? It becomes more apparent with each product that UD's new printer/packer is not capable of doing the job.

Glenn - you are not the only one who thought of this. It was my very first thought when I heard from someone that UD was bringing in replacements. Believe me, I remember the AO fiasco very well; it is one the very few things about UD that I actually harbour resentment over. In a short time, my 3 spare AOs went from being gold to bronze.

I have a strong feeling that this year's YGs will not hold value. I talked to a few people at the Bonsor show about it today, and most said they aren't touching this year's YGs, due to the miraculous appearance of replacements at Expo and fears there will be tons of them out there in a few short weeks.
