Ironman Indy
2009 Most Generous Member of the Year,
OK on to our 4th Original 6 team - Chicago :hawks:
The Blackhawks enter the NHL in 1926
1926-27
That inaugural season sees Hugh Lehman handle the goaltending duties playing in all 44 games
1927-34
The second year has Charlie Gardiner take over as Chicago’s main man as the 43 year old Lehman retires and becomes the Hawks coach
** I still need this card! **
Gardiner plays in every game for Chicago during this span. Wilf Cude sees 2 periods of action in 31-32 as a utility backup
** I need Cude's 1935 OPC RC **
Crown Brand from that era
Gardiner would die from brain surgery complications in the off season
1934-35
Lorne Chabot comes over from the Canadiens for one year. He wins the Vezina with a 26-17-5 record and a 1.80 GAA
1935-39
Iron Mike Karakas takes over and would be the Hawks only goalie for the next 4 seasons.
Karakas was the first American goalie to star in the NHL and also introduced the trapper glove.
1939-40
Paul Goodman makes his reg season debut after being called up in the 1938 playoffs to replace an injured Karakas
Goodman would get the majority of starts over Karakas who was loaned to the Canadiens in Feb of 1940
1940-42
Sam LoPresti would be the hawks #1 goalie for 2 seasons before going to serve in WWII at the end of the 41-42 season
LoPresti holds the records for most shots faced during a 60 minute game (83) and is the father of future NHL goalie Pete LoPresti
Goodman would retire at the end of the 40-41 season
Bill Dickie replaced LoPresti for one game - his only NHL appearance
1942-43
Bert Gardiner comes over from the Canadiens for one year as Chicago’s lone goaltender for the 42-43 season
1943-46
Hec Highton is the Hawks goalie until January at which time he is traded for Mike Karakas
Karakas is the main man again until 1946
Doug Stevenson would play in 4 games during this stretch as an injury replacement
1946-50
Chicago would start 4 different goalies over the next 4 seasons as each of these tenders only lasted one year as the #1
Paul Bibeault comes over from the Canadiens for 46-47 with Emile Francis seeing action in 19 games that year
For 47-48 Francis takes over for the majority of the starts with Doug Jackson seeing action in 6 games
48-49 sees Jim Henry come in for one season
In 49-50 Frank Brimsek comes over from the Bruins and plays in all 70 games before retiring at the end of the season
1950-52
Harry Lumley comes over in a trade from Detroit and would be the starter for 2 seasons
Other goalies seeing action are Marcel Pelletier, Red Almas and Moe Roberts
Roberts was just shy of his 44th birthday and was the Hawk's Asst. Trainer when he replaced an injured Lumley. His previous NHL action was 1934!
1952-57
Al Rollins comes over from Toronto with Lumley going the other way
Jean Marois, Jack Gelineau, Hank Bassen and Ray Frederick see limited action during this span
1957-67
Hank Bassen and 3 other players go to Detroit in exchange for Ted Lindsay and Glenn Hall
Mr Goalie would be the hawks #1 for the next 10 years and would play in 502 consecutive games dating back to his time in Detroit
His streak would end in November of 1962 when, of all things, he bent over to adjust his pads and hurt his back.
Denis DeJordy would serve as his backup from 62-65
Dave Dryden gets 11 games as the backup in 65-66 and DeJordy and Hall would platoon for the 66-67 season before Hall is lost to St Louis in the Expansion Draft
1967-69
Dryden and Jack Norris back up DeJordy for 2 seasons
1969-84
Tony Esposito comes over from Montreal and would be the Hawks goalie for the next 15 seasons beforing retiring in 1984
His 15 shutouts in his rookie year still holds up as a modern day record
During this era the goalies to serve as backup to Tony O are Gerry Desjardins, Ken Brown, Gilles Meloche, Gary Smith, Mike Veisor, Michel Dumas, Gilles Villemure, Eddie Johnston, Murray Bannerman, Bob Janecyk and Warren Skorodenski.
Bannerman would platoon with Esposito during Tony’s last couple years before taking over in 1984
1984-85
Bannerman and Skorodenski share the load with Bannerman the #1. Chris Clifford and Darren Pang appear in 1 game each
1985-87
Bob Sauve joins the Hawks and shares duties with Bannerman for a couple seasons
1987-88
Darren Pang shares the #1 role with Bob Mason for one year
And that’s it for Chicago’s goaltending history, at least the first 60 years or so
