I was reading comics earler (filling out my X-factor collection) and I came across this ad:

Now after searching just the words "Lacter Boston" I finally happened to find out it was Blaine Lacher after searching "Boston Goalies" and the year the comic was released and found a couple links:

Blaine Lacher: Wikipedia
Blaine Lachner: Absurd Goalie Monday

From those links it sounds like he had an amazing start?I was wondering if anyone knew if there was something behind the scenes that hampered him from becoming a full time goalie or backup? Also, how big of a chase was there for his rookies at that time?

I also came across this ad while reading:

Just added that one for the laughs since everyone already knows about Daigle.

The Absurd Goalie Monday link said he ended up a tire builder for Goodyear. It also makes a lot of comparisons between him and Jim Carey, which I hear being brought up as a joke here and there but it seems like at some point collectors were choosing between the two to chase.

Just another kick to the pants of Bruins fans. We've had so many flash in the pan rookie goalies, just another in a long line. Lets hope that stops with Rask.

I agree, it is a bit like what Predators have, although Bruins have only every now and then this "hit-and-run" goalies - comes to take Calder or very close to it and then totally disappears. Nashville has the starter position cursed, basically all of their starters loses the starter's spot next season.

That hasn't happened with Rinne yet...he's been the defacto starter for 2 + years now, and shows no sign of letting up any time soon...

Jim Carey retired early and stated that he had enough money to live off of for the rest of his life.

Patrick Lalime got the demotion to the minors due to contract issues with the Penguins for years. And he is still playing.

Lacher sounds like hockey got to his head. Goalies should be the most mentally sound player on the team. Once the confidence goes then it all goes down the tubes. Sounds like he knew it was time to leave.

Lacher was great for a hot minute, but then he caved in, it was sad to watch.

Seems that we've had a long history of occasional epic goalies (Cheevers, Moog, now Thomas) with the gaps filled in by flash-in-the-pan, crash-and-burn 'tenders that start beyond our wildest dreams, and slide erratically into our worst nightmares. Go Bruins! Thankfully we've got Thomas and Rask now, I just hope they continue to hold it down.

Speaking of Boston goalies, I think the all-time worse was Evgeni Ryabchikov, who if I remember correctly was the ad boy for Signature Rookies back in the day.

I won't say you're totally wrong but it's important to realize that there's different levels of fails. Ryabchikov gave more "ok, not then"-reactions while Lacher gave more "come on, we know you can do it" reactions. For me, the later one is worse.

Don't forget Raycroft...1 great season for the Bruins and fizzle-to be traded to Hot-ronto where he was so hot you could hear sizzling..or was that fizzling...get those mixed up.

Carey made it to the Bruins in his 3rd year of the NHL. He was dividing his time with Ranford and Kolzig in Washington before he left. He had a helluva great RC year earning him the Calder Cup.
Lacher was one of those guys that was hopeful that fizzled since Billington was #1 until Ranford came over mid season from Edmonton. He never really had the ice time to create his confidence and once you've been to the top and demoted, "who cares!" I guess he really didn't want to play hockey THAT bad.
Ryabchikov had the hype that a 1st rounder has but fizzed way before. Some times it is the system and the chances that happen. Hannu anyone?
Example of the system going good-Tim Thomas gets the back-up role after Raycroft fumbles as starter, and started a few games in relief, played good enough to start more and more.

It is funny how you hear that the guy who has been a brickwall for your team all year and gets them to the playoffs, gets a contract extension and "might not be the starter next year"...Where is the team's confidence in their own player?

Sorry for the long rant but...

Lacher, along with Carey and Daigle are the biggest reasons for my speculation-averse approach in the hobby.

That's kind of what I'm wondering. What kind of prices are we talking on Lacher RCs? He was apparently popular enough to be the face of Skybox Impact's Premier Edition so it seems like the hype would have been huge.

Blaine Lacher did have a good rookie year and then he retired.

Jim Carey won the Vezina trophy in Washington and disappeared once he got to Boston.

The old timers like Cheevers, Moog, and Thomas did okay.

Raycroft did win the rookie of the year before the lockout season but wasnt too good after that.

What happened to Felix the cat Potvin?

During the 1980 Olympic Jim Craig won the gold medal for USA in one of the biggest upset in history! I don't think he did much in Boston.

Ranford had most of his glory with Edmonton and Team Canada.

In my humble opinion as a Cat fan looking in - I think Potvin helped Raycroft a great deal in 03/04 en route to ROTY, the next season when Raycroft had expectation heaped on him he crumbled in TO.

Potvin had an expectation of being a starter ( and the salary that comes with it ), but I think he would have been useful for another 2 or 3 seasons as the mentor type role that they employed that season in Boston.

The problem in Boston was that their starter ( Raycroft ) was on backup money and their backup ( Potvin ) on starter salaries. When the B's looked to address this they lost both.

I think Potvin would have fit in several cities with young netminders who need experience and sometimes guidance ....... Atlanta was touted at one point to work with Lehtonen ......... but I think he wanted to be the starter, and then the lockout happened

Just a small correction on the bolded part.

Carey couldn't have been splitting time with Ranford in Washington, as they were traded for each other. (How much playing time he was getting vs Kolzig, I have no idea).

To Washington: Ranford, Oates, Tocchet
To Boston: Carey, Carter, Allison
