Blues trade O'Reilly, Acciari to Leafs for package including 1st-round

Ryan O'Reilly is headed to Toronto.

The St. Louis Blues traded their captain, along with veteran forward Noel Acciari, to the Maple Leafs, in exchange for a first-round pick, a second-round pick, a third-round pick, and forwards Mikhail Abramov and Adam Gaudette, the teams announced Friday.

The Blues will retain 50% of O'Reilly's cap hit. The Minnesota Wild are retaining an additional 25% and will receive a fourth-round pick from Toronto.

O'Reilly is in the final season of a seven-year contract that pays him $7.5-million annually, but his cap hit with Toronto will be $1.875 million with the retainments.

Acciari is also in the final year of his deal and carries a cap hit of $1.25 million.

Bizarre deal for the Wild, can’t remember seeing a team buy a 4th round pick for pretty much no reason before.

If you have the cap room and the money, why wouldn’t you turn that into a pick? As long as you’ve got the capital to invest, turn it into a body.

As a leaf fan, I’m excited but cautious. We’ve been here, done that, with limited success. I hope they can figure out a blue line deal too but that might be asking too much.

Agreed, I think it worked out to $74,000 for an extra R4, so why not.

My best,

Ken
