Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney has issued the following statement regarding Coyotes forward Brett MacLean - who suffered a cardiac emergency last night in Owen Sound, Ontario.

“Brett was playing hockey last night in Owen Sound, Ontario when he suffered a medical emergency,” said Maloney. “Brett received CPR on site and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance where he was treated. He was then transported via an air ambulance to Knight University Hospital in London, Ontario where he was admitted to the cardiac ICU. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brett and his family. We request that everyone please respect their privacy at this time. We will provide an update on Brett's status when information is available.”

he was picked up off of waivers by Winnipeg then they placed him on waivers a month later and Phoenix picked him back up and sent him to the AHL in Portland

This is the reason I urge everyone to learn CPR and to know the location of your rinks defibrillator. This guy is only 23 years old and Cherepanov was 18 or 19 so it goes to show you that even the younger guys can be effected.

Agreed. I am a firefighter paramedic and a good friend of mine, fit as a horse, went into cardiac arrest a few months ago.

Fortunately he was on duty and there was a medic there with a defibrialltor. He was shocked SEVENTEEN times between onset and arrival to the cardiac cath lab.

He currently has no neurological deficits and looks good lonmg term for a complete recovery. But really, like NYR said, knowing CPR and operation of a CPR could save a family member or friend if you ever get put in that situation.
