The money is bad, the no-trade clause is worse, IMO. He's exactly the kind of guy you'd like to be able to unload in the stretch run if you are out of the running.

^ agreed,
you shouldn't get a 5 year deal w/ a no trade, no matter what,
that's too long to have to have a player, regardless of money.

A good offensive D, there are few bettter right now. However the leafs need to find a blueliners that are strong there and know how to defend their own end. I agree its not a great deal for the Leafs, long term and the no trade clause YIKES.

If the no trade clause was a deal breaker then Fergie should have let him walk.
I see no reason to give any player a no trade clause, it handcuffs the team for 5 years.
Dan.

Ouch... The Leafs could've used that money to bring in a guy that actually shows up for big games.
Teams figured out how to defend against B-Mac's slapper in the 2nd half of the season and he did squat, plus he needs a few refresher courses on how to play D. I think he has been enrolled in too many of Aki Berg's classes.

5.5-6 mil' a year for 5 years PLUS a NTC... Wow. Just, wow.

he was hurt the last 3 months of the season, like a trooper he played, sure stats dropped but yours would too with a sore peepee, still top 12 in the league when healthy, agreed little too much money, but whos out there for the 5 million you want to lure??????????

He is worth 3 million TOPS... Not surprised by this at all though... Leafs fans gotta get sick of it year after year of letting go of the good guys and keeping the ones they should let go... Brutal deal for the Leafs...

Thats my opinion anyways...

Rod

I don't mind keeping Mccabe but man the NO trade clause and price tag are just too much.

Thats about 2 million more, 2 years more and a no trade clause too much.

At least this should scare the Sens... Redden and Chara will want at least that now. Unlikely they can sign both... but remember, Melnyk promises he will do anything to help the team win. I guess that means he will reach next to the cap and give Redden and Chara what they want right?

Your opinion of 3 million is dumb though.

I agree that 5.5-6M is too much... but Mccabe would have got around 4.5-5 on the open market for sure.

Geez, Rathje signed for 3.5, Hamrlik signed for 3.5, Norstrom 4.25, Foote 4.75, etc when their was a lower cap in place! Now that the caps gone up you can bet a team would be willing to pay a 28 minute, 60 pt defencemen around 5 million.

*Clears throat and points at Leaf fans*

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

While this deal is probably fine in the short term, the Leafs are gonna be hurting for cap space. And they won't be able to move him because of the NTC. If they didn't have that in there, it's not so bad. But they did, and it's a terrible contract when there are better defencemen on the market.

McCabe is a good defenceman and I think with the cap going up he'd probably get signed to another team for that price anyways. I don't like the no trade clause though...that was a stupid move on the Leafs end. If he ends up sliding...the Leafs could be paying in a big way. It'll also be interested since they have 9.25-10.25 Million locked up between him and Kaberle..what are they going to do about their goaltending.

most players waive the clause anyways when they are shipped to a contender at playoff time, mccabe will be no different,so if they tank he won't want to be there, can anyone say colorado or rangers here we come they pick up anything and they like to pay

^ yeah, most,
not all.
I see him being someone who's comfortable where he is.
Unless the fans really start to get on him.

Rod

hehe had to defend my Leafers Rod... and heres a good way (taken from a friend on another site):

OVERALL POINTS

1. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 139
2. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 135
3. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 114
4. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 107
5. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 100
6. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 99
7. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 99
8. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 93

McCabe & Kaberle are a close 2nd, and a mile ahead of anyone else in the East. Now let's see how these 8 specific groups rank in other categories compared to each other.

TOTAL GOALS

1. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 37
2. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 31
3. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 29
4. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 28
5. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 28
6. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 26
7. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 24
8. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 23

ASSISTS

1. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 107
2. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 102
3. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 85
4. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 76
5. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 76
6. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 75
7. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 72
8. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 67

POWER PLAY GOALS

1. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 20
2. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 19
3. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 18
4. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 18
5. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 17
6. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 17
7. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 14
8. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 13

GAME WINNING GOALS

1. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 8
2. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 7
3. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 6
4. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 6

AVERAGE ICE TIME (Individuals)

1. BRYAN MCCABE (TOR) 28:17
2. TOMAS KABERLE (TOR) 28:10

3. Niklas Lidstrom (Det) 28:06
4. Chris Pronger (Edm) 27:59
5. Zdeno Chara (Ott) 27:11

On closer inspection, Lidstrom and Schneider may be a little better than our Dynamic Duo, but not by very much. So what are the Leafs really getting for their $10 million investment? Out of the top 8 point-scoring defense pairs in the NHL, we have a pair who are:

2nd in points
2nd in power play goals
4th in goals
1st in assists
1st in game winning goals
1st and 2nd in ice time
