Remember I posted yesterday regarding the Fake Bergeron EYE patch?
http://www.hobbyinsider.net/forum/showthread.php?t=52659

I wrote to Chris Carlin regarding some replacements and the Bergeron SPA FW patches in question(I sent him both scans) Here is his response:

"With regard to your query on the patches, here's the response from our hockey team:

The two cards in question I believe have been augmented and let me tell
you why. I have enclosed a photo of the Bruins 3rd jersey and you can
plainly see that the two "augmented cards" have a piece of either eye on
the card, meaning those two "fake eye patches" are definitely from the
Bruins 3rd jersey. The problem is we have never had a 3rd jersey for
Patrice Bergeron only a home and away jersey, white and black
respectively. Meaning someone bought the 3rd jersey or just the big
patch from it and cut out each eye piece and placed it onto each card to
resell at a high value. The collector did a good job to realize this
and he should know that his card is good and the other two are fakes.
Tell him we only used the shoulder patch of the "bear" on the home and
away jerseys and we never used the big bear patch from a 3rd jersey for
him. So he will know to stay away from those fakes and that the card he
has is the only type of "eye patch" we would of used for Mr. Bergeron.

I hope that helps."

Sincerely,

Now what is the next step? Should I email ebay to stop this auction? How do I go about this? Has anybody done this before? I want to bust this guy! That's one more win for the good guys :) We should form a squad here at HI.. Vegas, Jaywings, and all the rest of the Patch Guys.. We'll call ourselves the "Patch Squad".. Just thought you'd guys like to know!

Lionel - TREMENDOUS job there, man! Kudos!

It would be great if Al Muir (Beckett) would run a bit in the next issue about "forged" patches. He could highlight these two auctions... and the response from Chris Carlin at Upper Deck. It could be called "Private Eyes" (bad pun) or similar. What do you think? Or do you think Beckett will actually care?

They could call the article, "You got Served!" sorry I just had to say it! lol I am not sure if Beckett has time to cover such a trivial matter, they only "price" the market of cards... I honestly don't know if they would be interested in such news..

They are supposed to cover all "hobby news"... not just "price cards." Otherwise, I would seriously question their existence.

I just posted my suggestion on "the other forum." I'm curious to see if the two bigwigs decide to chime in.

Yay perhaps I am a bit jaded and pessimestic. I hardly ever read any negative news about the hobby in the Mag. Even though this is a negative aspect of the hobby and I am sure Beckett doesn't want to "bring it up" in the spotlight, collectors should know because not everyone knows that fake patches are pretty easy to make...It may shed some bad light on the hobby but the light needs to be seen..

The length some people will go to, just to make a buck! Hopefully this is stopped before someone gets ripped off!

Wouldn't UD have a fraud protection policy where they could pursue legal matters against someone like this?

Paul

Lionel, just make sure you get credit for that if Beckett runs that response from UD, since it's your private e-mail!! Don't let 'em just steal from ya!

Lionel,
You may want to ask Carlin about the fraud dept. I believe they have a person that does something about that stuff. Someone on the other board had a patch that he pulled and put on ebay, and someone from fleer (I believe), said the patch was bogus and had the auction pulled. It was a football card I think. In that post, someone listed the phone numbers, or names of the people responsible for that at each card company. It's been a while since that post, but it was on Beckett. Just FYI.

I sent Carlin the ebay item # for the fake patch. I also emailed ebay, as well as a few bidders on the card. I saw user cardhutt buys a lot of hi ends and he is also bidding on my Bear patch as well as the fake one. I'll let you guys know if anything new happens..

UNBELIEVABLE! I emailed user "Cardhutt" who is high bidder currently on the "fake" patch and told him the neews along with a fwd of the email from UD.. He writes back "the patch looks very authentic, and it would cost more than the 200.00 it will sell for to make a fake one. I think you want it, and are just trying to discourage other bidders. not cool"
HMM Okay, he's right I want this fake patch for myself! What a TOOL.. You try to do something nice and they don't listen..

Thanks for the detective work! :D

OMG!

I can't believe his response.

Here you are attempting to let him know about the possibility of a questionable piece!

Well as they say, at least you made the effort to inform him. You've given him the info to make an informed decision. If he/she choses not to heed the info offered! Shame on them!

I just hope the new "eye" doesn't fall off when he puts the card in his favorite holder :(...that would not be good!

Will enjoy seeing another "Crown Jewel" Chris,,,it seems you have many left over :) thanks again for the handy work...will it be a big deal to insert a new Lupul maybe next week at arrival to finalize it?

cardhutt's response reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Bart thinks that the Comic Book Guy is letting kids buy Bonestorm for 99 cents, rather than just renting it:

Comic Book Guy (cardhutt): Oh please, take my money. I don't want it.
