Buyback Hockey Cards

Are you asking about the 1/1 buybacks per in 2019/20 Upper Deck series two or are you asking about the buybacks that are then autographed?

On the 1/1, it was an extra treat but out of the cases and boxes I opened I didn't hit anything that was huge. Most were just common's with a 1/1 stamped on them. Some were in pretty sad shape as well.

On the buyback autographs, there are some amazing hits so there is a risk / reward factor when you make your purchase.

To each his own.

Yes on collecting Young Guns. They are one of the mainstay rookie cards each and every year.

How does the buyback process work? Are the cards handled by someone else before going to Upper Deck?

I can't answer that but here is a buyback that Upper Deck put out earlier this year.

Upper Deck got the product back, put it in the sealed case and sold it as a new product.

I like when they get the buyback autographed by the player and then re-packed. It makes for some cool inserts and they are all hardsigned. Here are a few from my PC:

Is a Young Guns buyback card considered a true rookie card?

Does it have an autograph or a serial number on it?

For me, If it's the same exact card "bought back" in its original form, then yeah, I'd consider it a true rookie card that was distributed differently and I need to be aware of that.

If it's now altered with a serial numbered or autograph, then I would just consider it a Young Guns 'parallel' of the original rookie card, not a "True" rookie card anymore in the traditional sense.

But you do you man, there really is no firm answer on this. Depends on the collector and their opinion on the subject.

Same. I really like the BuyBack concept and I think it can produce some awesome cards that were previously "just base", etc.

Some base cards were just made to be autographed. Sure, the premium prices might not sit well for some collectors and I get that, but from a card perspective the cards themselves look great. This is another reason why I try and collect as may base/insert IP autographs as I can for my collection as a side project. Fun, but also pleasing to the eye.

The card also comes from 19/20 Buyback set and not the same year as the Upper Deck Series 1/2 when the Young Guns card was released.

Unless they have them signed and reinserted, or they have nice memorabilia, I don't give a rats rear about buying base cards I can get for pennies and then stamping them as a 1/1 and making them a "hit". Terribly cheap and lazy.

This is a debate that often rages in Facebook groups. It's really pretty clear. If the card itself has been altered in any way, it is a "new" card. Period. Of course, I'm talking about manufacturer-released cards, not talking about IP autos, for example. I do NOT consider buybacks to be part of the original rainbow, however, as the buyback was not initially released with the product or intended to be part of the rainbow. Take YGs for example. Does the acetate YG released in UD2/SPA count as part of the rainbow? Yeah, of course, because it was always intended to be part of it. A buyback auto YG or stamped buyback YG released years later? No. It's the "same" card as the original YG, just altered to be a different card. It's not like that card would be added to the original product's checklist...it's a new thing. I'll use a card I own as another example. I own the Jaccob Slavin 2018-19 UD Buyback 1/1 released in 2019-20 UD2. It is a 2019-20 card and is not part of the 2018-19 rainbow. Again, it all comes down to the intention of the card. Was a buyback intended to be part of the original rainbow? No, obviously not. Same thing goes for cards like the SPGU jersey numbered autos, which ARE 1/1s. They are part of the full print run of the unsigned base, but the intention was always that those cards were the only of its kind despite not literally being numbered 1/1.

Anyway. Enough rambling. I just get super annoyed with collectors on Facebook who have no rationale for their wild viewpoints. LOL
