Buyouts!

At first glance, it made zero sense to me.....

The Wild save about 3.3 million, in REAL dollars, on each contract. That's not much money. They were each owed $10m over the next 4 years, and that cost has been reduced to $6.666 (two thirds).

For the 2021-22 season, they'll get $5.2m each in Cap Relief. Next season it will be about $1.2m each, and it's just a few hundred thousand in Cap Relief for the last two years of the deal...... then they take on $833k cap hits (each) for four years.

I believe this about freeing up spots on their protected list. Both had NMC, and had to be protected.

Adding to my prior comment.... it was believed that the Wild's protected list would look something like this:

F – Zach Parise (NMC)
F – Mats Zuccarello (NMC)
F – Kevin Fiala
F – Joel Eriksson Ek
F – Jordan Greenway
F – Marcus Foligno
F – Ryan Hartman

D – Ryan Suter (NMC)
D – Jared Spurgeon (NMC)
D – Jonas Brodin (NMC)

G – Kaapo Kahkonen

The NMC guys, they HAD to protect.

This would mean exposing Matt Dumba.... or Greenway, Foligno, Hartman.

Now they get rid of Suter & Parise... can protect Dumba... and say, Victor Rask.

Deep down I guess they were on the hook for that cash regardless, and guaranteed they would have lost Dumba or Greenway to Seattle.

Best news in team history.

Now they can make a real run at Jack Eichel and ylthan re-sign Kirill Kaprizov and Kevin fiala

Keith Yandle bought out by the panthers

There’s a serviceable guy that could help quite a few teams and will probably take a discount for a chance at a Cup. He’s not a 1st pair guy anymore, but you could do way worse for a 2nd or 3rd pair guy. I think there will be quite a few teams ringing up his agent.

I think just about any team would take Yandle. A lot of these older players taking less money to play on good teams. A lot of bonuses for playoff performances as well to take away from Salary.

Canucks place Virtanen on waivers to buy him out

The Vancouver Canucks have placed forward Jake Virtanen on unconditional waivers to proceed with a buyout, general manager Jim Benning confirmed Sunday.

In mid-May, a woman sued Virtanen, claiming he sexually assaulted her in 2017. The Canucks placed him on leave less than three weeks after she first made the allegations. The soon-to-be 25-year-old did not play a game after April 29.

The team would have owed Virtanen $3.4 million in total salary at a $2.55-million cap hit next season, according to CapFriendly. Vancouver signed him through 2021-22.
