Is it normal for someone outside of Ontario to charge Ontario sales tax? Also what are the eBay rules if they charge it when it is not listed in the description either?

If it is an actual retail location that charges GST, I believe they would charge you if you are a Canadian resident out of province.
If it is not listed, I would send them a note stating that it was not mentioned in the listing. It is only fair as a buyer to be notified in advance if they are dealing with an actual business that charges these fees.

If they are stubborn about it at all, I would agree to pay it as long as they can "willingly" provide you with a GST number. If they refuse, then simply don't pay and notify ebay.

Hope it works out for you

Remember it's not "GST" and "PST" any more...it's HST so it's combined...

I'd do the same as what OilersRule mentioned...ask for their registration #. I once had a seller try to charge and all it was, was extra money for them, as they weren't even registered.

Absolutely... companies that are registered for GST MUST charge HST where it applies. Soon everyone will be HST and the confusion will end.

Unlikely to be happening in Alberta - the minute that happens, the Conservatives would be thrown out as soon as the next election comes along
