Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty was back on the ice at the team's practice facility in Brossard on Friday, just over three weeks after fracturing his vertebra and suffering a concussion.

Pacioretty joined teammate Andrei Markov and strength coach Pierre Allard for a 20-minute skate in full equipment, just days after beginning off-ice workouts.

"It is part of the protocol, it's the beginning of his rehabilitation," said coach Jacques Martin.

Pacioretty suffered the injury when he was slammed into a stanchion by Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara at the Bell Centre on March 8. The NHL did not punish Chara for the hit, which caused an uproar in Montreal where police launched a criminal probe into Chara's actions.

Defenceman Jaroslav Spacek also practised for the first time since suffering a knee injury that required surgery on March 4. He will continue practising and will travel with the team to New Jeresy but will not play Saturday night. Martin hopes to get Spacek back for at least one of the team's final three regular-season games next week. He's missed 11 games since the injury.

Forward Jeff Halpern skipped Friday's practice for a therapy day and will not travel with the team; coach Martin saying his condition is day-to-day.

The Canadiens face the Devils in New Jersey on Saturday, holding the sixth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 41-30-7 record and 89 points.

They still try to make the injury seem like it was epic. Had no idea the Canadiens had Superman skating for them

Doing better then Savard and Crosby. I wonder if he will be able to play again this season. That would be a great for the Habs morale. Nice to see that he is back on the ice and not a serious as first predicted

He should channel Kurt Angle and just keep saying "I played in the playoffs with a BROKEN FREAKIN' NECK!"

Penalties aren't dished out based on result. its intent. Chara intended for that partition to et some good head. pacioretty head. it's not the law. in legal terms, yes shooting a man and killing a man is different. nhl isn't like that. if you need a guy to die to say chara did something bad, then I can't change your opinion.

I have to ask this because I truly don't know the answer. How was Max able to resume skating so quickly but Steve Moore couldn't? Was it not a similar injury (broken vertebrae) that both suffered?

Straight from the mouth of Mark Recchi, who came out the next day and apologizes...and what if Montreal did have superman on their team....it's better than having the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Frankenstein any day of the week...

Hey look, I'm glad the guy is ok. I have said that all along. I'm just saying the injury was played up by the organization.Say what you will, but if you are already skating, the injury was just not that bad.

Pacioretty had a non-displaced fracture of the 4th cervical vertebra.

Moore fractured three of his vertebrae. I don't know the extent of those fractures, i.e. if any were displaced or the severity of the breaks.

So Moore's was more severe in terms of both the number of bones broken and likely also the severity of the actual breaks.

It's great news for Max "Wolverine" Pacioretty that he's not only walking around less than a month after the injury, but beginning the process to get back on the ice as a member of the Canadiens.

I agree...I feel like everyone is shooting at me here lol.

I am glad he is ok. He is a local boy, and I was watching max long before he was in the NHL.

All I am saying is that the initial reports made it seem like he was hugging death. Now he has miraculously found his way to health. No. He was injured, badly. But not badly enough that he's out any severe amount of time. I'm catching crap for that, but nobody has stopped to even think that perhaps I think that's a good thing. He's a tough player, and he'll be back soon enough. Celebrate that. Don't misread what I say at pac bashing...just calling a spade a spade

and with this I'm of the opinion that this is done.
