Somebody shed some light for me on this one. I know it has a bv of $400, but I figured it just was never updated. It's still just a insert numbered to 100.I know the buyer has low feedback but he emailed me a few times about insured shipping and so on.

I expected maybe 50 bucks

i would guess either a devoted Gretzky collector(although from his feedback maybe not, although maybe he just found ebay) or a crazy set collector.

I'm going with "crazy set collector" for $400, Alex. :D

Great sale :) That is a sweet insert set, and honestly, sometimes you don't see those that often, took me a while to find a Forsberg back in the day....so that could be why.

Thats a case of the BV influencing the final sale.

If the BV was $100 bucks I'll bet that thing doesn't break $50 like you said. But because it has such a high BV it influences how high interested buyers may go.

There are quite a few people trying to put the 97-98 Donruss Limited set together. Those are tough but even so $150 for a 9 year old insert is pretty good. I've seen Gretzky Auto jerseys go for less.

If memory serves correctly that used to be a $400 card. If he's a set builder from the mid-90's be probably remembers that and feels like he got a great deal.

Remember that a fair bit of that product sat around for quite a long time until Dave and Adam's bought out the remaining inventory. The Fabric of the Game set was a pretty nice one, and judging from this card, it was the wood version. You really didn't see parallels or inserts /100 or less coming at least 1 per/box in most hobby boxes until 98-99 with UD.

It's amazing how collectors' view of inserts has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. It used to be a serially numbered insert/10,000 of Gretzky could go for $100 easily - now it has be out of 25 to get that kind of attention.

Those are some tough inserts ... whether a set builder or Gretz collector. Everyone is jaded because of all of the full-set parallels #/100 in recent years and the fact that they are 1 per box or so. Even though that Fabric of the Game set was something like 75 cards, I believe only about 8 or 10 of them were #/100 making them scarce in comparison to the rest. I know the Paul Coffey (also #'d /100) from that set books at $80 still - and it cost me about $25 a few months ago... and I didn't feel that was an outrageous price either.

Older inserts /100 tend to be much tougher...heck...even a few inserts /250 or /500 from say 95-96 or so would probably have the same effect then as pulling a decent auto/jersey would today.

Of course, I may be biased ;)

Exactly. When's the last time you saw the Hart Hopefuls Golds or Lord Stanley's Heroes Finals show up en masse?

I just sold the lord stanley heroes finals version of Messier on ebay for $127!! The older inserts xx/100 are really tough to find and some player collectors are probably ready to shell out the cash just to complete their collections.
I kind of like seeing the older inserts doing well, makes me feel like I didn't waste my money on all my older Yzerman inserts that are low numbered!! :D
