Hey All,

Long time no talk! I have what I consider to be an interesting question. I remember reading that vintage sports cards are one of the highest performing asset classes in the period following the dot.com bubble. This got me to thinking about adding some more cards to an investment strategy to diversify my portfolio of stocks and bonds. I am curious though:

1. Have you guys had the same experience?:whatthehell:
2. If so, are we limiting this to mega star rookie cards?:goal:
3. Am I going to be blacklisted on this form for talking such blasphemy?:owned:

Very much looking forward to hearing what you all think!:corn:

I think cards are like muscle cars. Every year there's less and less of the older stuff. Restore/grade and it's worth more. For the most part, the longer you hold it the more valuable it will be.

I’ve fully entered the vintage ‘game’ just over a year ago. I say fully because about 10 years ago I did purchase some raw 80s RCs that were eventually PSA slabbed. From my own research and monitoring of prices during this last year, yes, the big names have increased. The big one is of course “The Great One”, his stuff was fairly steady but ever since the sale of his record setting PSA 10 prices have increased not insignificantly in all grades. For example, I purchased a copy of his in PSA 7 for $792 a year ago and the latest PSA 7 has sold for almost $1700. I believe that 8s were going for in the low $2Ks and are now firmly in the $4-$5K range if not more.
In all honesty, high grades of the big stars/RCs have increased tremendously.

I'm going to make a crazy recommendation...knowing full well that you've missed the boat on Wayne Gretzky's RCs since EVERYONE has heard the news and now the card is heading towards the stratosphere, I'm suggesting that you go after HIGH GRADE key cards that are the most susceptible to damage or to not grading high historically.

I'm setting my sights on those cards as well, so as not to create competition for myself, I won't offer you my own checklist BUT I will tell you that if you collected cards as a kid, you'll know what those cards are.

Hey Ryan,

Good to hear from you. it's been ages. That is amazing advice, and yes, I know exactly what you mean.
