Chalk this one up in the "I need a life bin."

In the past I would bug sellers to leave me feedback after a few weeks. I no longer do so. Now when I get my item I check to see if the seller has left feedback for me. If he has, and there are no other issues, he gets 5 stars in all the ratings automatically. If he hasn't left me feedback, he gets 3 stars for communication and 4 stars max in the other ratings.

WOW

So for probably about half of sellers you give them 3,4,4, and 4 ratings (and that's "4 max" so he'd be lucky) just because they didn't leave you feedback before you left feedback for them?? That may be the most ridiculous/ unreasonable thing I have ever read on this site.

As one of Jim Rome's sound clips would say:

BLOCKED! BLOCKED!

Seriously that is the worst thing I have ever heard. If I get everything in a timely fashion i just give out 5 stars across the board. I know how hard it is a seller sometimes because according to eBay the buyer is always right  Giving out 3 and 4 stars left and right is an absolute joke.

I leave feedback right away regardless of what the buyer does. I honestly don't care if they leave me feedback or not. I mean it helps but I am a bit concerned that people are mis-using the feedback system. You should always leave full good feedback if you get what you want and how you want it. I don't even charge shipping on my auctions and I still get dinged for shipping and handling charges. I need to stay above 4.9 in order to keep my good standing, having this sort of criteria to meet only makes it hard for me to maintain my good seller status.

This is also why I stopped doing auctions and only have an ebay store. I won't let anyone with less than 30 positive feedback bid on my item without contacting me first.

The eBay system is completely stacked against the seller which I find unfair especially for those of us who try to go the extra mile and do good for the community. At least I would hope people are happy with my service because I do honestly care. Am I alone in this?

re: habsheaven issue that everybody is responding to

There's really no sense in continuing on down this road because you're going to end up getting the thread locked, and it's a separate issue altogether than what the OP posted.

If he's going to take a passive-aggressive road with his eBay feedback, and you're that concerned, just take the passive-aggressive stance back and block his eBay ID, which was posted above. There's no sense in dragging it out any further than that IMO.

Wise words my friend. I just wanted to have the last word before shut down of thread lol

How is that even possible? eBay prevents a buyer from leaving anything less than 5 stars to a seller who offers free shipping. I've had it pop up several times when leaving feedback. IIRC, free shipping automatically fills the star rating with 5 stars.

As for habsheavens comments, rather than dogpiling on him like so many on here seem to love to do, I will say this: While I don't agree with his reasoning behind what he does, he makes somewhat of a valid point. eBay's Star system is seriously flawed. It creates unrealistic buyer expectations of sellers, and penalizes sellers for things that are beyond their control (ie: postal mishandlings). If the star system was converted to a percentage rating, that means that every seller has to be in the top 4% in order to not get dinged by eBay. And which is more important? For a buyer to give their honest opinion about a seller, or for everybody to get blanket 5 stars just because the item arrived in one piece? For that matter, why should a buyer care whether or not a seller has to pay extra fees for eBay's unrealistic expectations of seller service? And where do you draw the line between 4 stars and 5 stars anyway? If somebody take 3 days to send an invoice, 4 days to respond to an inquiry, charges $4.00 shipping from the US and 3 business days from time of payment to actually package and ship the card, is that seller honestly as deserving of a perfect rating as a seller who responds to inquiries in 24hrs, charges $2.00 for shipping and sends same day or next AM after payment? Probably not.....

Again, not condoning habsheavens reasons for giving 4 stars because I vehemently disagree with his reasoning and methodology, but lets show a little maturity on here folks and rather than getting our panties in a knot and trying to *****slap somebody right off the internet, try to disagree in a less offensive manner. It's much more appealing than a virtual lynchmob.

Why is it that every time someone on these boards is wayyyyyy in the minority, it is considered a dogpile, a sense of entitlement, yada yada. Whatever happened to the good old " massive amounts of people COMPLETELY disagree with you".

Every time I see someone type dogpile, I go leave crappy ratings all over eBay. It's my new thing.

Shhhhaddddap with dogpile.

There's a difference between disagreeing with somebody, and posting unconstructive criticism just because it seems to be the cool thing to do.

For instance, you might think you are being witty with your sarcasm. I would have a tendency to disagree.

The sense of entitlement I was referring to was; why do sellers EXPECT to receive 5 stars if other sellers are performing better than them? Why do they get an automatic 5 stars if they wait 3 days to ship? or if they charge $4.99 to ship?

Anyone care to explain THAT "sense of entitlement"?

For those who are not familiar with the way Ebay considers their rankings, giving a '4' is not really a slap in the face.

To those not-so-frequent users of Ebay, giving a '4' on one of the sub-ranks may be considered fair - after all, who is perfect?

They may be doing you harm but are totally oblivious to it. They probably do not know that a score of '4.8' is detrimental to your business. Heck, if anyone got a '4.8' out of '5' on anything in life, I'm pretty sure they'd be ecstatic.

How many of us have been asked to fill out an on-line survey or something else similar? For those questions, "On a level of '1' to '10' with '10' being the highest...", how many of you put in '10's on all 50 questions. I'm sure we've all plugged in the odd '7', '8' or '9' just to make it look "real".

I think the flaw is in the Ebay rating system. Why not use a '10' score? This would give buyers more flexibility to put in a '9' which would equate to a current '4.5' score.

(BTW, I always give '5's where possible).

Look, I didn't mean to start WW3 on here. I was going through a real rough patch (no pun intended) and just wanted to vent. I understand what everyone is saying and I have to say you are all correct. I had to sell items to pay for my son's doctor bills or else we know what happens. Trust me, I was probably getting 3 hours sleep a night max for about a month and a half. I don't mean to pass over feedback but I did have more important things to worry about and had to rush through a lot of stuff. On a better note, he is doing great...finally!!
