Chara signs 7 year extention

Long time for an aging player.

On the other hand, he always played smart hockey. He never relied on blazing speed or heavy hitting, therefore the 'aging' process takes longer to set in on a player like Chara. Barring some unforeseen injury this could be a good deal.

As with any deal these days, we have to see the terms first before saying much more. But on the cover the signing looks good. Bergeron and Chara locked up long term within a week? Who's next...

Too long by about 3 years IMO. That's fine by me though, the B's have been scaring me lately with their young talent, so hopefully they're forced into a Hawks style talent dump (minus the Cup) within a couple of seasons. Between Tim Thomas, Marc Savard, Patrice Bergeron, and Zdeno Chara, that's a lot of cap space tied up.

7 yrs. $45M. The cap hit is actually 6.9M; not 6.5 because of the in the last year of the deal Chara will be 41 and as per the new post Kovalchuk rule that the league put in that last year, which is $4.5M for Chara doesn't count against the cap so the hit is $400K more per year.

6.5M is a little steep for 0-5 in game sevens. There is no question he's a great player but is he worth that much? Yes he's a big guy. Yes he's got a big shot from the point. However his skating and first pass are average at best. Lidstrom and Pronger take teams to the finals because of how good they are. What has Chara done to be paid at near the same rate as those two?

Ouch! The guy has become a softie in the past couple of years for his physical play. Is he a top 10 D man, without question. Can he last 7 more years, I doubt it.
