I think this is an interesting turn of events that will be a good experiment. They are making you buy a Becket Membership, $10 a month to view a cards "book value". Now I will admit to popping on occasionally to grab a insert or common book value when i'm on the go and curious. I just wonder how things go when people don't have the value to compare too. I bought a lot yesterday that had a Stamkos Rookie Impressions insert. I figured I would look it up. They had one for $20.24. no book value. So if that's the asking price of the only card I would say for that is now the book value till more pop on. Curious when I got home and the book is $30 and ebay has auctions at $15.

So going forward I think the site can be of use to gauge the real market vs a book. It will hurt the sellers as they would always say one week only 50% of book value but after you take a look on ebay and other sellers you would see it is still priced too high. My favorite were the players club platinum people would have in there account sale that were grossly overpriced as they were avail for $1-$5 each on ebay but were book value $100 and they slashed to $20.

Love the site, just be interested how the sales and prices evolve without the book value attached.

Tim does a pretty good job of explaining the Beckett changes here...

I get how Beckett would want out of this relationship. I can only assume that saavy collectors have started to veer away from Beckett as COMC has gotten more and more popular and has more cards available as one has been able to find "free" Beckett values there. Now that COMC has so many cards available, Beckett has to do something to protect their service (no matter how flawed it may be).

I've bought about 200 cards on COMC in the last 2 weeks. For anything over a dollar BV has shown up for me. If that is going to change then it is going to slow down my ability to buy.

Edit: I should add. That 200 would have been 400 if the common base cards were priced better.

This was one of the driving factors on why I moved away from the BMP and branched out on my own.

They focus on other ventures outside their walls 90% and ignore the people that pay for their service. They are trying to latch the gate after the horse has left the barn.

BV has always been a joke and there have always been cards that sell at xx% of BV (as well as some that sell at xxx% - but rarely). It's good for trades and for naming insurance replacement values.

I've made 3 fair-sized purchases from COMC and am indifferent as to whether the BV shows or not. I imagine this might make it harder for sellers, though, if they want to set sale prices as a % of BV. I should probably read the blog link that Timber09 posted...
