Wonderful! Another reason why I should only trade within Canada! I got slapped with a ridiculous duty tax and it is simply mind-boggling! So my question to you is, what is the highest duty tax you have been charged with? Shipping from the US using regular mail isn't even that much slower than using Express/Registered, so that even makes it all the more frustrating! Is there anyway to avoid these crazy taxes???

*sigh*

I'll say it again, although it's clear that people don't pay attention: NOBODY PAYS DUTY. You're paying sales taxes. NOT DUTY.

lol my bad steve...funny i asked the guy at the post office if it was a duty tax several times and he clearly specified that it was a duty tax =/.

who delivered it? UPS or Canada Post? If it was Canada post all you should have paid was the tax on the declared value + a $5 brokerage fee. UPS' Brokerage fee is about $35 + tax on the declared value. Either way them the breaks the Canadian government wants there cut too on whatever you buy outside the country.

$5 handling fee and then the tax....brutal. I have paid more in the extra tax then the item and shipping has cost me.

Well I just had the same problem. I won a baseball card on Ebay for around $10 dlvd. Seller goes ahead and puts the value at $100. I have no idea why since it doesn't even book that high! Post man comes to the door saying I owe $14 in taxes plus $5 handling. I was not paying that so I declined delivery and the item will go back to the seller. I sent him an email telling him to resend it without inflating the value of the card so that I'm not stuck paying more money in fees than the actual card!

The only time you can avoid it is if you can provide proof that the item cost under the $20 exemption. Otherwise, you'll have to **** it up and pay the taxes. It's completely at random, and the others are correct: If shipped via normal mail (USPS), it should amount to $5 Brokerage Fee plus GST/PST on the declared value (converted to CDN Funds)....and never ask those kinds of questions to the clerk at the PO. They are usually completely clueless in regards to their own policies, let alone the policies of the Canadian Gov't and CBPS.....

I swear I've paid enough in cross-border taxes to pay some of these bastards' salaries!! It's just another Ottawa-cash-grab... if I remember right, there's no taxes to US citizens for items going south, unless it's over like $500 isn't it?? Wish Ottawa would do that too... I hate having the mail girl show up and say "bring your chequebook out"... ugh

The sender was from the US and he shipped using Global Express. I am 100% sure he was not aware of the taxes and if he was, he would have just sent the package using regular mail!

I still can't believe they charge the recepient a $5 dollar handling fee. You mean I have to pay you because you decided to open my mail?!? The Canadian Government are a bunch of jerks.
