With Christmas coming up and money a little tight I have started to entertain thoughts on moving portions of my collection. I’m debating putting up my 2004-05 ITG heroes and prospects autograph set (including the update set). As far as I know this is the only complete set in existence (the Jiri Hudler in the update I have only seen the 1 I have). This set contains 167 autographs including prospect autos of Crosby x2, Ovie x4, Fleury x4, etc and HOFers such as Bobby Orr, tretiak , Roy, Beliveau, lach, Bower and the list goes on!!! If I were to put up this set, what do you think is a realistic ask? Thanks!!!

I think it will be Very hard to sell as a set. You can try that with a hefty buy it now and best offer.
Realistically you should split it up. Many will suggest starting at 99 cents and let them go. I’m not a fan of that. I’d price each card individually. Tougher issue will be sp and ssp cards of non star players....unless people are working on sets, it will be challenging to generate interest.

Things to think about are, are you trying to get out what you put in, make a profit or just move it out. All these factors should affect your pricing and timeline

Definitely break it up. Base/common autos sell to a bulk buyer, medium players sell here or Facebook or eBay and the SSPs most definitely sell either in a line based on past sales or run an auction.

I get what you guys are saying about breaking it up but it took like 10 years to put together, don't know if I would have the heart to break it up!

Based on your last comment I feel like you will regret it, if you were to move the set

This is what I am leaning towards but it is tempting due to all the big autographs in it, if the price was right. I'm not desperate for money so I'm not going to break it up or sell it to low.

Figure out a way to display them, or even the ones that are special. Put them away for 6 months, pull them out....did you miss them if so redisplay. if not consider moving them

The sheer value of this complete set is so large that you would have to list it at a pretty absurd price to avoid low-balling yourself. The trouble is that you will have a tough time finding a buyer who is A) interested in acquiring the entire set & B) has the money to buy the whole set. It would be a lot easier to sell the big name cards because those will certainly sell, especially with the current hobby climate.

Personally, if I took the time, effort, and money to build a set as remarkable as the one you have, I wouldn't want to break it up either. I just don't think you are ever going to get full value if you sell the set in one transaction.

Either way, you have to go through everything to price individually, so why not sell individually. All the common ones at the end sell them as a lot.
If you come up with a price for everything, I think some people would be interested, I may be. PM me a price when you get through your research.

Keep in mind, your selling a set, not the journey it took to build it. It sounds like you put value on the time and effort spent to build this set as well as the cards. Not sure others see that when considering buying a full set.

Only way your going to sell is individual pieces or sell the complete set to someone else wanting to piece it out to make profit( if it's worth it). If your past the personal connection to the set and just want the money then maybe the rise of certain cards will offset the drop in others. If I'm only selling the set then I would expect to take a hit.

I'd put the work in and sell individual cards

If you are not hurting for money, put it up with a large BIN for a while and see if you get bites. I've done that in the past for other things and was pleasantly surprised at the offers.

You have 2 Crosbys and 4 Ovies?

I would do what 99goals suggested. A complete set with Crosby and Ovechkin pre-rookie as the headline would bring in a ton of interest I would think.

And that having been said I would keep a Crosby and Ovechkin for myself, piece out the rest of the big names. Once the smoke has cleared you can find a bulk buyer here to take the excess. Already interest in that by the looks of it and I would be interested as well. Also interested in any doubles of Red Wings you may have.

If you sell it bulk, there's not likely a collector buying it... it's a reseller and you won't maximize what you make from it. That said, I life Ryan's idea of letting someone else market it for you as that's more likely to attract the casual hobbyist with more money than brains that will hit a higher price.

You could also ship it off to COMC and let them do all of the work of getting it posted, and parting it out through them on ebay.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Agreed. So many yrs for getting full set is very remarkable. Wait until someone is willing to buy the set. Breaking it up I wouldn´t do if I had worked it so long.

When I was doing the 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 OPC Logos, and I got to about 285 of the 300 cards (at that time, was supposed to stop at 300 - guess what happened afterward?!), I had to break it up to sell. I was at a position I would have needed to spend another $9,000 or so to finish it (needed a bunch of the "Cartoons" at $1k or more each) but there was no realistic chance to sell it off, even by year as that would have been $7,500 or so per season. Sadly, few people will ever place the "value" in the complete set that you will. I say keep it until you die, then you won't know the pain of someone piecing it out for a fraction of what you spent completing it.

I presumed that the way he worded it, the complete set checklist had 2 unique Crosby's and 4 unique Ovie's. I don't read it as though he has duplicates of any of the singles?

I change my answer…Goldin. Auction it and let them handle the marketing.

Would they market it though? I rarely ever see marketing for big grail type hockey cards in Goldin. A 17-year old H&P set might get buried in the listings. Those of us who know the significance of the set know, the masses most likely don’t know or won’t appreciate it like we do.

Might even be better off on Classic Auctions to be honest. They handle hockey sets and cards all the time.
