Day 1 with my son is in the books.
Little recap...good, bad, ugly
VIP Reception
Topps put on a nice little "reception" and had a raffle for all the folks who got their early...very nice...food was pizza and chicken fingers and cookies...more than fine. Not good - how bout' a few more tables in the reception area??? The area is HUGE but me, my son and brother wound up sitting on the floor, as did many folks.
We did get a puck signed by HOF Eddie Giacomin, so that was cool
Hit the show floor for a quick peak to see the layout. My son wanted to do the UD Redemption first thing, so we see that BlowOut has a whack load of OPC Platinum out for $69. He grabs one and we hit the UD area (which only had 2 other people breaking at the time)
Pack 1 - $3 rainbow auto - WONDERFUL
We are probably 2 cases into this stuff and have had less than stellar luck on the Autos. As I am telling my brother that we only need a Panarin and McMoneyBags to finish the set...my son opens the final pack...I see him kinda shake a bit...WHY?
Connor McDavid AUTOGRAPH RC!!
UD Rep takes a pic of him and hangs it on their board....I think that made his week for him, as he wanted to go back later to take a pic of the pic
Also did a Topps Chrome Baseball box for the Topps Redemptions packs...folks in front of us hit a Hank Aaron Black Auto 1/1 from their packs...we did not have that luck
Back again tomorrow all alone...but from the looks of things, I am not expecting much from the HK card front...or even any card front. The National has changed so much over the years, as most of the Convention Hall is taken up by Corporate booths, Auction Houses and the like, that the card dealers seem few and far between. (unless you are looking for vintage)
Big pet peeve of mine when it comes to any card show and especially one of this size. Try and have your cards somewhat organized...not asking for things to be in number order and such, but whether I am going through your .10 box, $1 box or $5 box for HOCKEY, I want to only look at HOCKEY. Some dealers are good with this and those are where I will spend my time looking thru...others are not so good and although maybe I am passing up looking in a box that has the one card I need, I just dont have the time to waste. AND if your toploaders look like they were first used to store your 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly RC and now your new cards 30 years later....I also take a pass.
Hope to see some of you there in over the next few days. Will be there tomorrow with either my vintage looking Whalers or North Stars hat on so say hello
Thx
Michael
